Hi There, my wee girl is 9+ months old & was just getting interested in solids once she started crawling a few weeks ago. Now she has constipation & is pretty much resfusing solids (apart from banana & apple plus a few other things). She was eating prunes but not anymore and will not eat pear. What can I do? She is still BF'ing no problem but I am scared its not enough. Any ideas?

Are you offering her water? Banana is very binding.

It does take a while for their system to get used to solids, have you tried brown sugar water to get her to go or massage her tummy.

I do offer her water, kiwifruit juice & prune juice. Haven't tried brown sugar water yet & she doesnt really like massage. I know bananas not the best but I don't want her to stop solids all together. I only give it to her now and then to get her to eat.

Undortunately banana and apple are two of the worst foods for constipation in little ones.
DS used to get bunged up quite a bit when he first started eatin properly too, he didn't seem to get upset or anything with it though, but if it worried me I would make some prune juice for him, and offer it in a glass or syringe (he loves the syringe and will always take anything from that) but you cant force them, so unless she is really straining and/or upset about it, I wouldn't get too stressed.
DS would sometimes go 3-4 days between poos and then he'd be good as gold again

It's really really normal for them to get constipated when they start getting into solids - just go with the flow, offer things like pear and prunes (and prune juice) and give her as much breastmilk as she wants, and she'll be fine. If she doesn't poo for a while, a Dr can give you something to get her going - but mine didn't prescribe anything till Jacob had been 15 days without poo (and he didn't go till day 18!).

I microwave a couple of prunes in a bit of water and add the water and prunes to the blender when I make DS's food. Works great.

Dont worry to much, she is still getting most of her nutrition from you and thats the main thing. Just keep offering food and she will start eating when she is ready.

Hey ladies thanks for your replies. Its so hard to see her in pain.
She did a poo yesterday which didn't seem to bother her too much so fingers crossed. I went back to her favourite apple custard & gave her lots of prune juice too. Will only give her banana mixed with pear or prune for a while.

You can also buy colloxyl drops from the chemist to help get them going, they work pretty well. My best advice is water water water, at least 10ml at every feed. I have been giving my bub weetbix for breakfast lately and Ive found he's 'going' really well on that too hehe.

maybe try veges.IE carrot and kumara mix, as higher in fibre.

avoid the banana and apple.

baby rice with pear and banana is higher in fibre from memory than the plain baby rice

custard isnt really very nutrious, far better off with veges for fibre

Kumera's dreadful for constipation, I'd avoid it like the plauge! No offence, GR.... but that's my experience.
