Hi ladies, I have a question!
I have been bf for just over a year now, but have had AF back since DD was 2 months old.
I know BF can affect your fertility, but I thought only until AF returns....anyway someone told me the other day that the hormones produced when BF can still have an affect on fertility even though AF has returned. Does anyone know if this is true?

From what I understand you can be less fertile due to breastfeeding, despite having AF. I'm pretty sure there is some info on KellyMom if you want to do a search.
Although in saying that there are lots and lots of woman who get pregnant while breastfeeding still. I am one of them, DS was/is breastfeeding up to 14 times in any 24 hour period and we got pregnant second month of trying, I was fully prepared for it to take up to a year.
Hope that helps

If you get AF back in the first 6 months PP then most likely you are not ovulating yet. (though not always of course). After 6 months it is more likely. So one would assume you are ovulating now.
That said, while you may be ovulating, the increasted prolactin caused with bf (and at this stage of bf they are only slightly elevated anyway) can cause Luteal Phase Defect where you get af too soon after ovulayion not giving a fertilised egg enough time to implant.
I had the latter and took b6 tablets as this can help and got pg the next cycle I was still feeding 5-6 during the day and 1-2 overnight and DS1 was 9.5 months when i got pg.

Totally depends on each woman. I got AF back when my DD was 13 months old. I was charting so knew I was ovulating every cycle, but my luteal phase was short (5-7 days). However, this was an issue for me prior to conceiving my DD. Though this can be an issue for many women who are BF and TTC once their cycles return, they can have short luteal phases, as the prolactin levels are still high enough to keep your cycle from working properly. If you had normal cycles before, and didn't struggle to conceive, chances are high that you'll conceive while still BF.
Of the 7 women I know in my group of friends who were TTC while BF, I'm the only one who hasn't conceived. The others all had no problems.

I got pregant when DD was 12 months, and had only had 1 AF. I was still breastfeeding twice a day, and I'm 14 weeks pregnant and still happily feeding her.
Have you tried charting, or using OPK's? Then you can clarify if you're ovulating, and check to see if BF is affecting your luteal phase.
Good luck!

Thanks for the replies ladies :)
I haven't officially started TTC, just kind of seeing what happens at the moment, just wanted to know if it was likely to make things take longer :)
I would be interested to work out exactly what my cycles are doing, but not sure how...might google it now :)
