Hi Sally,
I presume you are talking about Hyperemesis Gravidarum in pregnancy. Most naturopaths would take the same path as acute morning sickness - ginger root, chamomile, homoeopathy, acupuncture, however depending on how severe it is, it would be sensible to have medical intervention.
The cause is not fully understood yet. I would recommend getting a herbalist to make up a mixture of medicinal herbs that cannot be purchased over the counter.

One from me, even though it's also not relevant at the moment. Can you have too much folic acid? I was taking the pills prescribed by Dr 0.8 mg, and also a womens multi and Exec B tablets which both have folic acid in them, and wondered.

Hi Mucky_Tiger
Raynauds can respond to natural therapies, though given that there could be a few different lifestyle factors involved seeing a alternative health practitioner is a good idea.
Essentially anything that helps circulation and blood vessel health is worth looking at: Ginger root, cayenne pepper, prickly ash bark, niacin, bioflavonoids.

Hi,
I am a Celiac and I have a son who is 9 months - I do not know if he is a Celiac yet (I myself was not properly diagnosed till my mid twenties) but I think I can have him tested from when he is a toddler... Anyway I am wondering if until he is tested should I just give him gluten as I kind of feel what is the point in not allowing him to have it if he is not a Celiac and also when they do the testing, you need to have gluten in your system?
Thanks Sophie

My almost 13 month old daughter has been on antibiotics pretty much full time since she was 6 weeks old as she has a high risk of getting UTI's because of a kidney condition.
She has been on 2.5gm of Inner Health Plus probiotics for children twice a day for the last 7 months but it still doesn't prevent her from getting thrush on her bottom and around her vulva. She would have it maybe 6 to 7 days out of 10.
What else can we do to prevent this? I try to limit how much sugary food she has and change her nappies really regularly but we just can't seem to get on top of it. Sometimes she cries as soon as we put her down on the change table in anticipation of it hurting and that breaks my heart.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received, thanks.

Hi Angie Babe,
The vast majority of a 12 month year olds immune system is in its gut. So probiotics and colostrum extract would help. Breast feed as long as you can - and of course - most people understand there are valid reasons why a mother may not be able to breast feed. Garlic Oil (Oil that garlic has been soaked in) dropped in the ear is supportive of the immune health as well. But of course because the ears are so vital and delicate make sure a doctor checks them out.

Hi there,
As folic acid is water soluble, you excrete most of what you do not use - so it is unlikely taking what you mentioned above that you are taking too much. Having said that - mega mega mega dosing with relevant health advice is unadvised.

Hi Cali and Jack,
The short answer is their is heaps that you can do. The best approach is to find an trained qualified alternative health practitioner to have a sit down face-to-face chat with, as they are a few more factors involved, and space does not permit me to go into them.
The health of the lungs is set by the health of the gut and its lining and various biological processes. Use of probiotics, colostrum and essential fatty acids is highly recommended.

Hi There,
My mum used to make me eat dry cabin buscuits and drink boiled water. However there are some better things you can do. Make sure it is not loose bowel motions - diarrhoea stings the anus and it normally associated with a gut bug or other gut condition. If it is ongoing I would suggest using probiotics.
Clinicians Multiflora is a good general support for gut health.
Of course if the symptoms persist then make sure you see a health professional.

Hi Jessenia,
One thing you can try is to sit backwards on a chair and lean over the back of the chair. Have someone press on both of your hips. Get them to apply the pressure as if they are pressing toward your spine from the side of your hips. This should help take a little of the pressure off your lower back and sacrum which is most likely where the pain is being referred from.
I would recommend ringing around some of your local osteopaths to see if they can offer you some ideas as well.

Hi Melissa, Probiotics would be the first thing to suggest, as the antibiotics your daughter was given may kill good as well as bad bacteria. Different probitiotics prefer different areas of the body. So our Multiflora product can help repopulate the digestive system, whereas the Flora Restore bacteria prefer the vaginal and bladder areas. Both these areas will need good bacteria to help restore the balance when bad bacterias and yeast have taken over. Peptical colostrum spray also helps support the immune system. Jane Naturopath

Hi Cazbaby,
Congratulations on your twins. As you are breastfeeding you could take PregaVit, which will provide nutrients as you have two mouths to feed. Also it contains chromium which is a mineral associated with cell sugar metabolsim. I cannot put names on this forum for naturopaths, but if you email me on jane@nhlab.co.nz I will send you some information.

Hi Kellie,
A child's chest health is often related to the health of the gut. They think there is a link there becuase the tissue that lines the gut and the tissue the lines the lungs are derived from the same embryonic tissue. So one suggestion is to look at ways you can support the gut and support the immune system.
Clinicians Multiflora supports gut health and probiotics have a reputation for helping the chest.
Clinicians Del-Immune offers support for low immune response.

Hi Sophie,
The test for a celiac is a real simple blood test. In fact I know a few years ago some health food stores were selling the blood test kits. Check that out and when ready you can maybe test it yourself.
I would love to see a gluten free world. I am assuming that the reason for wanting to give him gluten is convenience - and having kids I understand this. However if you are celiac, then you should have lots of food ideas to feed him. Rice and veggies, and fruit still goes a long way at nine months. I am a fan of not overloading young children's digestive systems too early.

My 4 month old daughter has been diagnosed with reflux. She breastfeeds at night and drinks refulx formula during the day. I am expressing milk but she refuses to drink my milk out of the bottle, or breast feed during the day for some reason. I think she breast feeds at night okay cos it is is bed with me and she can take her time easily. Three questions:
1. Could it be she associates the taste of my milk with a more adverse reflux reaction?
2. Can I add gaviscon to my expressed milk? Is it safe to give gaviscon and the renitidine (spelling?) we have been prescribed.
3. Are there any foods i should avoid that could be passed on my milk that make things worse?
Thanks

Hi there,
As a naturopath I would suggest a course of probiotics for bubs. The friendly bacteria in the gut are supposed to help create an environment where the acid in bub's gut is balanced out.
Do you know what and why the reflux is there? IE is it from a problem with bub's valve into the stomach? Were they premature or C-section?
I would do everything possible not to give my child gaviscon etc unless absolutely needed.
In terms of certain foods being expressed through your milk, the research is very little in this area, however in my experience in clinic, it appears to be very common. Major suspects are gluten, sugar, and excessive animal flesh consumption (increases your body acidity) - but it could any of numerous things.
Clinicians Multiflora capsules opened and sprinkled into the formula and the like will help support gut health.

My 5 month old twin boys have shown to be intolerant to dairy and soy so are on goats milk formula, would a lactose free formula be suitable? I have also given up dairy while breastfeeding and its been like having new children they are extremely settled less windy less grumpy etc. Also cleared up their dry skin too, just worried that if I try something different we will be back to square one.

Hi Marie,
First thing I would do for chronic sinusitis is to cut out dairy. It is mucous forming and if you have a history of having a blocked nose it may be that you have a sensitvity. If you have green/yellow mucous I would suggest Xylitol nasal spray, if you just have a blocked nose and clear discharge I would try MSM Nasal Spray. I would also suggest if you are trying to conceieve then Pregavit to provide a sound nutritional basis.

The following products will help support a healthy immune response:
Clinicians Multiflora - helps the gut flora which is intimately involved in the immune response (up to 70%)
Clinicians Del-Immune - helps the immune system respond quicker

The research/trials I referred to is my 14 years experience using probiotics in similar circumstances and seeing them work.
When a child is born by C-section it misses out on the starting bacteria it should get from the mother's vagina where the starting bacteria lie in wait to populate the newly form gut on the new born baby. Putting my head on the chopping block I have suggested to mother's of C-section babies to start giving them probiotics to help the gut start it's normal healthy function.
I would also be adding in Colostrum.
If the acid is blocked long term on a baby - we are talking well into toddler years - then the rest of the digestive system has to over work to break the food apart that the acid-less stomach did not. Having said that -there are reasons beyond room here when the developing stomach and associate organs have certain conditions where the acid may need to be blocked.
Probiotics and colostrum can help get the gut up to speed in terms of its digestive power.

HI SJP
Ideally you have been taking fish oils and a pregnancy supplement throughout your pregnancy. If not you could always start now. There are several studies showing positive association with fish oil and mood. Also low nutrient levels can affect mood, so supplementing with a prenancy multi can help this. If you have surgery probiotics can be beneficial to help digestive health, which may be affected by drugs administered.
Hopefully these measured help, but if you have any problems with low mood be sure to go and see a health professional.

Hi Dixie,
Yes Raspberry leaf tea has a mild toning affect on the uterus. Some have liken it to 'weight-lifting' for the womb. It is one of the herbs you can drink in all trimesters. It is best drunk as a herb tea.

Hi Lisa,
There are a number of areas you could look at with regards to how you are feeling. I should see your health practitioner and get them to look at your blood sugars, thyroid, iron and other nutrient levels. In the mean time taking a prenancy nutrient may help and I would suggest you keep energy levels balanced by eating 3 main meals and 2 snacks. Try and have some protein at each as this helps to keep energy constant. Refined carbohydrates like cakes, biscuits, white rice, bread etc will cause an energy surge, but give a dip after.
Good luck Jane

thanks heaps shelley |
Hi Shelley,
I wonder if he is eating lots is he growing quickly too. If so there may be some nutritional deficiencies involved. You could try him on some Vitamin and Mineral Boost, the powder makes a nice nice and at this age he only needs 1/4 tsp. Worming mades sense adn I assume he is not an overly anxious child as I am sure you would have mentioned it.
Try the powder and let us know how you get on. You can contact us through the Clincians Web Site.

DD (2yo)has a dry chesty sounding cough. Just wondering if there is anything you would recommend for this? It seems to mainly come on at night about a hour after she has gone to sleep but then only for a couple of hours until the morning but then by lunch time it has gone again.
She has had it on and off for about a month.

Hi Jaune,
I am questioning why you want to boost fertility while breastfeeding. Breastfeeding prolongs the action of a hormone called 'prolactin,' which has a tendency to suppress the other hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle. Most herbs and supplements tend to increase these hormones.
So you can see that getting pregnant and breastfeeding sort of conflict. Having said that it is possible to get pregnant while breastfeeding though the herbs and supplements would tend to work against breast milk production.
My best advice is to take a multi like Clinicians Multi vitamin and mineral boost to ensure all your nutritional needs for breastfeeding and pregnancy are met.

Hi Hennypenny,
It would really depend on whether your boys are dairy and soy intolerant or if they have allergies. The allergies show up in a blood test with an antibody, whereas an intolerance means you have insufficient lactase an enzyme required to digest lactose. If they are doing well I would be inclined so say leave well alone.
Glad to hear they are doing so well.

Hi Fattykat,
Has she had a chest infection?
IS the room cold or damp?
Clinicians Prospan has been proven by avid German research to do the following three things. 1) Relax the breathing muscles. 2) Dilate the airways 3) Make any mucous on the chest more liquid.
The overall action of Clinicians Prospan is very supportive of lung health.
**But we recommend for all children to be checked out by a health professional as there may be something else underlying it.

She hasn't had a chest infection and her room is pretty warm & I run the dehumidifier in there a couple of days a week.
I've been putting it off taking her to the dr as it clears during the day so thought it was more likely to be an enviromental thing. I think it may be time to head there though, if there is no underlying medical issue I will try her on Clinicians Prospan.
Thank you for your advice.

Hi there,
I have heard that particular fragranced oils cannot be used in pregnancy, & after a stillborn baby three months ago, have just found out I may be expecting twins, so am really anxious/ nervous this time round. Can you please advise whether it is safe to use a few drops of these oils (lavendar in particular) on a neck heatpack? I am struggling to sleep properly as I have heartburn and whatnot, and found the heatpack beneficial, but am wondering if this is safe. Thank you! Lorin

Hi Lorin,
What positive news to hear that you may be expecting twins after such an ordeal! Lavender Oil is OK in pregnancy, however for up to date information on essential oils which may help during pregnancy it is best to contact a qualified aroma therapist. If you cannot find one, Absolute Essential are the people to contact.
From a nutrient point of view, magnesium is useful for relaxing the muscles and it may help you sleep better.

A relevant one from me this time - my son has a nasty infection in his eyes, and while he's on anti-bs for it, all the gunge and stuff weeping out and him rubbing his eyes has made the skin underneath them red and a bit raw in patches. Given that it's his eye area and infected already, so I dont' want to put anything there that will risk complicating that, is there anything I can put on them to make them feel better?

Yes it is difficult when young children have coughs, many of the standard pharmaceutical cough mixtures are contraindicated in children under 2. Help is at hand Ivy Leaf has been safely used in Germany for over 20years in its current form and is widely recommended by Paediatricians overseas.
Ivy Leaf is available in pharmacy, because of your childs age they may want you to get him checked by a Doctor first just to be safe as small children can become unwell quite quickly. If all is well than yes your child can safely take the same dose as recommended for a 2 year old. If you require further information contact our technical support line.

I often suffer an upset tummy which leads to diarrhoea, it often stems from eating too much, or not enough, but not always. I can't seem to relate it to any particular foods.
Can you recommend anything to help with this?

Hi Mama T,
Food intolerance is far more common than food allergies and can difficult to pin down which foods are causing a problem. Diarrhoea can cause an imbalance in the friendly bacteria that inhabit the digestive tract. These bacteria carry out a multitude of functions such as; assisting with digestion, manufacturing b group vitamins for energy and maintaining immune system balance.
Taking a daily probiotic for a 1 to 2 monthscan help address this imbalance.
But you also need to look at your diet as well, two very common foods that can cause these probelms are dairy product and gluten which is a protein found in wheat, oats barley and rye. Do you consume these foods on a daily basis in about the same amount or do you eat more some days than others and does this tie in with your symptoms? If so it may pay to go on a gluten or dairy free diet for a at least 2 to 4 weeks and see if your symptoms improve. then reintroduce the offending food and see how you feel.
If you can't make and easy connection with either of these foods then I recommend that you contact a naturopath for an individual assessment.
Take care,

Hi Hopes,
I sympathise with you eye infections are difficult in small children as they tend to wipe their eyes because they are sore which means they spread the infection from eyes to nose and vice verca. I would suggest that you only wipe his eyes with a clean damp cloth regularly to clear away the infection as any cream you fry and put on the skin will get wiped into the eyes and create more problems.
Have you got antibiotic eye drops or eye ointment from your Doctor? Often eye ointments are used in children as they stay in contact with the eye longer and are easier to use. If you have an antibiotic eye ointment you could put a small amount of that on the inflammed area as it does not matter if it gets rubbed into the eye.
You can always call the surgery and ask for a prescription for eye ointment instead of drops. Remember that when treating eye infections you should continue to use the antibiotic for 2 days after all the symptoms have cleared to ensure all the bacteria have been delt to, this will reduce the liklihood of the infection coming back again.

Hopes - the girls used to get conjunctivitis chronically as babies. We found the best thing ever was using a cup of cold tea (recommended by Plunket and my GP would you believe!!) - just make a plain cup of tea (1 or 2 teabags, in a cup of boiling water, wait for it to cool and then we used cotton pads to wipe their eyes with the solution. It worked amazingly well!!

Hi, I would suggest homeopathic chamomile for teething. If you look at the indications it says children want to be held all the time, have one red cheek one pale, Child wants many things which they then refuses or throw away, tooth pain and face swelling. All very relevant for teething don't you think?

Hi Cali,
Sorry to hear that your little girl has been ill with hand foot and mouth virus, poor thing. I would suggest using the Clincians Pepticol PRP. This product is made from small isolated fragments of bovine colostrum, the specific parts that support immunity. As you will know being a mum colostrum is found in your breast milk, which is why women are encouraged to breastfeed. It comes in an easy to use spray form which is ideal for small children.
I hope she gets better soon. Best wishes Jane

Hi Amythiele, I would suggest taking fish oil and topically there are several plant based eczema creams in health shops that you may want to look at. You could also look at putting lavender oil on your fingers. I know you can also put oat meal in a bath or in your case a bowl and soak your hands in it to stop itching.
Hope this help Jane Naturopath

Hi Kellie,
A child's chest health is often related to the health of the gut.
