DH has a work conference in Sydney in October and we're considering extending our stay for a week so DD and I can tag along and have a family holiday.
I'd be grateful for any recommendations or tips on: a) good places to go and things to do with a 7 month old b) public transport, how easy is it to negotiate and whats the deal with carseats? c) should I buy a small umbrella stroller or just use the manduca? Thanks in advance  -------------

My girls will be 2, so slightly different, but we are going for a week in a month's time. For carseats, I am planning on hiring them....you can take carseats on the plane though for no charge (bubs needs to travel in it though) which may be easier for you!! Public transport is supposed to be VERY good - my best friend lives there, and she has said it is best to buy a week long pass for the bus/train system.
We are going to go to Taronga Zoo (slightly expensive at $44 AUD for an adult, but it covers 2 days entry and is awesome apparently) and there are heaps of parks and stuff around. I'm on a fairly tight budget, so we are doing more free things, with the exception of the Zoo. Not sure about the umbrella stroller though sorry, I would say manduca would probably be less hassle. I don't have any choice but to take my umbrella stroller cos my two are 15+ kg each and I cannot carry them everywhere!!! I can apparently take my umbrella stroller on the plane though (I am flying with Jetstar and Pacific/Virgin Blue). |

Just a comment, was fab taking our carseat away - we've taken it a few times now. When we flew DD did not need to travel in her car seat. It went in the hold. |

I took A to Sydney when she was 9 months old. I took the carseat (went into hold) plus the mountain buggy. I did need the bigger buggy so she could sleep in it. I missed out on baby seats on the plane but it was alright her being on my knee, she just b/f on take off & landing which put her to sleep so that was great.
My friend lives in Sydney & used public transport all the time with her kids so I imagine it'll be quite easy. ------------- Kel http://lilypie.com">

We were in Sydney last year, sans baby though, and the trains are awesome. We didn't use taxis/car at all. We caught one bus, but I would avoid them in favor of the train I think. Pram would be fine on the train, they have a space by the doors in each carriage, we saw several mums using them while we were there. Plus the train leaves from the airport so depending on luggage and how close accommodation is to a station you might not need a taxi at all.
Check out out the aquarium and wildlife centre in Darling Harbour, B will enjoy some of it and DH and I had a good enough time when we went by ourselves (big kids that we are). I would take a pram for sleeping and carting baby supplies personally. Oh and check out ikea if you can. Worth it for the kids section alone! ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

I have only been living in Sydney since January but can definitely agree that the trains here are great except in peak hour times! You might have trouble getting your pram on at those times, DH tells me he can't even get on the train sometimes as its too full and he is often crammed on standing. Also I have only taken my baby on the train once so far (he is still pretty new) but the lifts sometimes are out at various stations (e.g. currently they are doing maintenance on the lifts at the Town Hall station so don't know if they are in use there) so it can get tricky if you have a pram. But that aside they do have space for prams like puddleduck mentions and there is a train that goes via the airport which is about $15 to the city if you don't want to catch a taxi to the city but you can ask for a taxi with a car seat though not sure how lucky you will get! I do love the frequency of the trains and have never had to worry about looking up schedules
Oh and just a note on carseats, here it is the law to have them anchored into the car (I assume taxis will have anchor points installed), we didn't know this and had been given a NZ car capsule for our baby which meets NZ safety standards (and doesn't need to be anchored) but not Aussie ones.. so we will have to get one when we finally buy a car. If you pay $20 you can get a day unlimited transport pass on all buses, ferries, and trains. You could go over to Manly beach on the ferry and also ferry between circular quay and darling harbour to get the most out of the pass as I believe I had to pay $13 for a return ticket to ferry to Manly. Darling Harbour is awesome and the aquarium and wildlife centre are fun too. They have a little kids train that goes around Darling Harbour that looks cute and there are some water fountains there that the kids here are fascinated with.
