My son is 12 and half weeks old and up until a few weeks ago would happily bf off both sides and hardly cried. Three weeks ago he started to refuse feeding from my right side and I have extreme difficulty getting him to even latch on as he immediately arches his back and turns his head and starts screaming. Trying different positions doesn't help. However in the middle of the night he will sometimes feed quite happily from that side and I can express off good volumes during the day (however he won't take a bottle).
He now screams for the majority of time he is awake during the day until he eventually wears himself out and falls asleep however will often wake up crying because he is hungry. In general he isn't feeding that much off the other side. Over the last week he has had a runny nose. Is this normal behaviour for a cold?? Initially saw my doctor and spoke to Plunket but with no real help. Hoping someone can offer advice as not quite sure what to do.

| Yeah, I think it's common for ear infections to cause babies to stop feeding on one side because lying on that side (and sometimes lying down in general) hurts too much. Perhaps you need to go back for a second opinion? |

Can you try an osteopath?? DS flat out refused to nurse on one side, he was a tricky ventouse birth so my mw referred me to an osteo, within one session he was drastically improving, after 2-3 he would feed off both sides happily.
Apparently it can be quite common -------------

| Thanks for the feedback at my wits end with this. No they didn't check his ears as he was asleep at the time. Will rebook to the doctors tomorrow. Did go to the cranial osteopath two weeks ago and his left side of his neck was slightly locked up however they apparently fixed it and he still ain't feeding right. |

My girl had this, but was fixed by going to an osteo, however she then had other problems. She couldnt turn her head one way and it was affecting her feeding, the only way I could get her to feed was lying down in bed.
Lie down on your left side and feed him your left breast, then move over slightly and feed him your right breast while still lying on your left side. I fed my DD like this for 9 months or so as she refused to feed any other way. Good luck -------------

| Been to doctors not an ear infection unfortunately (would of been an easy solution). He is slowly starting to accept feeding but it is a real slow process. Will definetely got back to the osteo. |
