I like debates. I think it's a great way of getting different opinions across to others. It allows all participants to have access to views they wouldn't have had if it wasn't for debate. It may even cause them to review their own opinions. It IS possible to have a civilised discussion about these things!

The problem comes I guess when people take a differing opinion as an attack on their own opinion (usually not the case) or when someone has the opinion that all other opinions are stupid other than their own. But when that happens - that falls outside my definition of debate - it's not a proper argument any more.

As a side note - I come from a family who love to debate things and although we haven't debated whether the sky is blue, there was a big debate a little while back about whether the sky is a mineral or abstract during a game of twenty questions where my brother in law out of nowhere decided to add "Abstract" to the categories Animal, Vegetable or Mineral. So there you go. We are a bit weird.

Also, for a little bit of light relief:

This is not the complaints department! Lulz.

I love a good debate. People have actually changed my mind on things with a good debate. I reckon parenting debates are grand - even if you fully disagree you always hear some interesting things and if you're lucky get some interesting books and links to peruse.

Its when it becomes "you're stupid/dangerous/neglegent/ignorant for doing your thing" that its no fun and hurtful to someone. I really couldnt care less if you Formula feed, rear face, baby wear, cloth nappy, ear pierce, vaccinate, circumcise, CIO, use a dummy etc etc but i do like to know why you do or do not do these things because i'm a nosey bitch!

ETA: I wish we had a debate of the week sticky, if everyone kept their sh*t together it'd be pretty interesting.

If debating didn't exist then the earth would still be flat and people would be without the wonders of modern medicine ... I could go on...

I think OB gets boring when there is no "debate" or other points of view being said.

I like watching people spit the dummy threaten to leave then start there own threads

Oh & I have got hooked on a couple of American forums...so interesting seeing what people in other countries do

I am a big fan of lurking on *cough* thebump *cough* especially to perve on their big arguments...you think OB is bad those ladies are cat-ty!

Ahah AandCsmum our first debate could be 'does the full moon have an impact on our moods'

A debate can be good, however there are too many people here now that think that their way is the only way and start dictating to others and then we don't have a debate we have arguing over why they do something a certain way.

I'm also inquisitive (ok nosey) about the reasons behind peoples decisions and how things work for them if they're doing something different than I am. How boring if we all ended up with a cookie cutter approach to parenting.

@ Bowie - if you find thebump entertaining you must check out mumsnet, the baby names section gets particularly rabid.

This is what happens when peoples posts getting taken completely out of context, I was commenting on the ear piercing debate which has now run to 3 threads quite a hot topic for something so benign.

This is the third Freckle

Soooo can we debate something now. Please pick something i know nothing about so i can watch with interest and not feel too pressured to get involved. Perhaps something not directly related to babies like 'should we raise the drinking age' or 'should we make cannibus legal'?

Here's one for you Bowie - What is your stance on cannabis use? Who here has done drugs? What would you do if your child did drugs?

Hmm... drugs... I think I'll just watch that one, it's a few years till Jakey's old enough to experiment

I like debates. I think it's sad that some people get nasty - I much prefer an intelligent and polite exchange of points of view - but find you can usually ignore the people who get a little heated and gain a lot from the more sensible and balanced comments. I like to know why people make the choices they do.

Haha, sorry caliandjack. I guess thats why we have debates though - what one person thinks is benign, others think it's disgusting or crazy or awesome etc

Lol. Yeah, me and my sisters argued it was a mineral. My BIL and brother argued that yes atmosphere and clouds etc are minerals but sky is just a concept. I say that's beside the point. ANYTHING that is not an animal or vegetable is by default a mineral. There is no bloody "abstract" category in 20 questions!!!!!

Awkward debate directed at me lol

Drugs - if you'd asked me before i bred i would have said make it legal, why waste all the time and money and resources on some stupid kids when half the time they just do it to 'show the man'. If its legal its suddenly far less cool anyway, its no fun to use drugs if you can just go down the dairy and buy then half the fun is meeting someone in a crack house and feeling badass.

Now i would say make it MORE illegal with harder penaltys so that the chances of DS getting his hands on any drug is more difficult!

However whatever he may try and do in the future i believe it is really important that your relationship is one that they can come to you no matter what. Its scary the situations young kids can get into but be too scared to phone home for help because they're so afraid of what their parents will do. I want DS to know even if hes 15 and drinks a bottle of bourbon that his best friend stole from his parents and ends up comatose covered in vomit in a park somewhere he can always call me and i will always come and get him and not even lecture him until the hangover has worn off. Of course that is easy to say without actually being the parent to a teenager but its how my parents were with me and i never actually got that drunk or did drugs because my parents were quite understanding about it. My best friends mom was so strict - she often walked home in the dark, alone, so drunk she could hardly stand because if she rang her mom for a ride and her mom found her drunk she would be in more trouble so took crazy crazy risks.

Oops accidentally i have talked about drinking instead but same goes, if he smokes some bad weed and ends up freaking out and in the middle of nowhere i would rather he knows he can call and i will come and help him then be afraid of what i'd do to him.

hmm Drugs...hard drugs we will be taking a really tough line on them with our kids. We have a family member who is Fu*cked because of them..so I know the fallout & effect & all because he had a good time in the country he is from.

Meh, it doesn't bother me, it's not my thing but I'm happy for people to be proud of their parenting style, whatever that is. I was thinking about making one myself for a laugh... I use cloth AND disposables, baby-wear AND use a pram, feed purees AND whole food, I do ERF but I vax... one muddled-up Mummy, perhaps??

I have a breastfeeding ticker because the son of a bitch bites and pulls and comes off with a let down and stops mid feed to talk and is generally making breastfeeding a pain in the ass and i need to look at it daily so i can mentally go OK! 4 months, 2 weeks, 4 days....just go to 4 months 3 weeks and you can quit...so on and so forth until this phase of his life is over.

I like Mummy_Becks siggy

I'd add to the drug debate, but I'm still pregnant so I'm sure someone will misunderstand and rip my head of for being some hardcore stoner junkie that doesn't deserve a baby.
I might just wait until I've had him to add to that discussion, haha.

I might make some joke tickers later if I can keep my eyes open long enough.

Hehe fattarts - you could probably ask the same questions about your ticker!

(Although I seem to recall you put it up as a kind of jokey contrary ticker because of the ones you are talking about? )

Haha - it amuses me that people are so very quick to label themselves unPC and that being PC is very uncool

Me - I'm neither PC nor unPC, just C.

(You see what I did there? I told you guys I was super hilarious)

tehehehe I have one of those sig's

drugs, not cool, I wish they could be banned but unfortuntely that means they just go underground and cause more problems. If they were actively managed by a pharmacutical company then I think there would be less problems.

the sky is the sky but for the sake of twenty questions I agree on it being a mineral, just cause its blue! hahaha
