My darling little baby hates the car, the clue came right in the beginning really the day after he was born and we were driving home he stayed awake the entire ride home, he was 1 day old!!!!!!!

Anyway I can placate with a dummy, but normally he screams, I have tried going when he is due for a nap, when he isn't etc and nothing seems to help.

Its very frustrating mainly cos he is small and can only handle about 90 mins of awake time at the absolute outside and by the time we have got somewhere, and done anything he is over tired and then screams the whole way home.

Anyway, I don't expect him to change, just looking for tips from others on anything that helped there littley like the car a bit better.

hi Fiona,

Any idea WHY he hates the car? Maybe if you can find a specific issue you could try a related solution. Ideas might be something uncomfortable or wrong with his car seat, or the position, or the clips etc? Maybe what he's seeing in the car, or NOT seeing - do you have a baby mirror so he can see himself, or you in the front seat? Is it something to do with what he hears in the car? Or a smell associated with the car? Try and think about what might be triggering the displeasure....? Is there something that scares him? Can you distract him with a favourite toy etc...?
Good luck with an answer - obviously something that would be great to solve....

While trying to figure out a possible trigger could you try giving him rescue remedy or something similar to help calm him before the car ride?
Good luck, it must make life alot harder

Have you tried seeing an osteopath? Its quite common for babies to be out of alignment and for it to show up when they are in a car seat. Good luck

We used to have lots of problems with the car too and I stopped going very far at all and tried to limit my drives to really short trips like up to 10 mins. That seemed to help and now he's actually pretty good and I can travel up to about 45 mins - haven't really tried longer. But now I can distract with food, which I think helps.

Part of what I think used to be the problem was he'd wake and then we'd go somewhere pretty soon after that so no time to hang out and stretch and relax, so I wondered if it was also timing. Once he was moving around a bit he definitely didn't like going straight from the stroller to the car, too much restriction perhaps.

I'm trying to think back to when it changed and I can't quite remember, but at some point I moved the carseat from the side to the middle and I wonder if that made a difference? If it's on the side can you move it to the middle?

What about toys? Do you have anything interesting hanging around for him to look at? Perhaps a few different things to rotate so it's not always the same?

Fingers crossed something helps to change it as it's pretty stressful driving with a screaming child!

Is he in a capsule? DS had/has reflux and absolutely HATED being in his capsule. Once I changed him to a normal carseat he was soooooo much happier!

I am going to get a mirror today, hopefully that helps.

Interesting about the osteo, I might try that - meant to weeks ago.

I have no idea what triggers it exactly, my first has always been great in the car, as soon as we start the car he fell asleep, this one gets over stimulated easily, I have a feeling he would be happier in a proper seat rather than capsule but we'll see, he was happy in the car seat when a adult was sat next to him, so maybe the mirror is a good idea.

Thanks for the thoughts, ladies, when he wakes I am going to take him in car to shops, DS1 is out today so I don't have to worry about screaming upsetting him, so we will see how we go.

Interesting about the osteo. DD used to hate being in her capsule. Like full on screaming fits the whole 20 minutes drive home from town. We took her to a few osteo appointments because she was favouring one side to sleep and also some issues with her breech positioning, hips etc. Pretty soon after that she stopped freaking out in the carseat and we managed a 5.5hr trip with one stop and no screaming. I thought it was age related, but the osteo makes total sense now.

Another thing I found was she got very hot and sweaty in the capsule. I used to put a muslin underneath her so she wasn't directly on the capsule fabric and also stripped her clothing down a few layers. It was easy to throw a blanket over her later if she got a bit chilly.

Maybe if none of the above help you could take bub, car and carseat down to plunket and have a chat with them?
