Please help!! I need white icing to make the cat in the hat's hat, have ready made red icing for the stripes, but how to I make white icing without using that horridly rich icing you normally use for wedding cakes etc?? I went to spotlight looking for food colouring powder, but they had colours, not white! I have until next Friday to find a way to make white icing, her birthday (and the party) is on the 11th!

So is the hat the cake part & you're icing that? I guess you could ice it with normal icing? but a really thick version?

I made marshmallow fondant for DS's birthday cake (its in the cake thread, page 12 I think, it's a number 1 cake) it was so easy and tasted so good. I like you tried Spotlight and cake shops with no luck ir too expensive. I can post my recipe later this evening when I'm on the PC and not my phone. Otherwise you can google MMF recipe and there will be heaps. We got heaps of compliments on how good it tasted

Are you wanting a white buttercream icing? Or a white icing made with just icing sugar and water?

Milly's sell a product called "Snocream" which is a substitute for butter and is completely white which I use to make white buttercream icing. It's so easy - pop me a message if you want the recipe.

Millys? Is that an online store, or a cake specialty store? never heard of them lol!

Buttercream would be preferable cos its easy to spread and shape, but soft enough to push the red stripes in to make it 'flat', rather than raised stripes if that makes sense?? Icing sugar and water type icing is too runny and sweet for my liking

i got a whitening food colouring from the cake shop in Manuakau (across from the warehouse). you add it to butter cream icing to make it appear white. the shop may have other ideas too.

Oooh thanks Bizzy, will leave the littlies with DP on Sunday so i can go check it out!

Failing that someone pointed me in the direction of a MMF recipe that might work, just need to buy some marshmallows and try a test run first! (although I still prefer buttercream, easier to make and work with lol)

Snocream looks...erm... wierd, what puts me off is that in order to use it you need to buy meringue powder too??

Hey, nope you dont need meringue powder - i just use snocream, icing sugar, and a little bit of vanilla essence with water.
