Hi there

My DS is 6 months old and he is so close to crawling, he commando crawls everywhere and is up on is hands and knees rocking trying to move, so I think it is not far away. He finds it really frustrating as he really loves to move and get where he wants to go. He's a physically active baby and doing a lot before his time.

Over the last month or two, since he started moving, his sleep has changed a lot. I know it does at this age but he's gone from sleeping 7pm to 4:30am with a quick feed and down again till about 7am, to waking multiple times in the night for no reason that I can see...

He's not cold as his bed is nice and warm he has a sleeping bag and heater on all night, mittens for hands if really cold, he has solids 3 times a day and a big bottle before bed so I doubt he's hungry, he does have a dummy but he can go to sleep without it too, he knows how to self settle as I've seen him do it during the day. I put him to bed sleepy but awake, and he settles straight away or after a short period of talking.

He wakes on cue at 3am and I have been feeding him then, but I have also tried a few nights not feeding him and he still wakes. I think it's a habit as he seems to be able to go without the feed too.

Ive tried a dream feed and that doesn't make a difference either. He still wakes at 3am.

In the last week or so he's been waking at random times like 11pm, 1am, 4am etc and all he needs is a pat on the back or quick cuddle to go to sleep, but sometimes he gets all agitated and stiffens up and it takes longer.

I heard somewhere that they practice the skills they are learning in their head while they are asleep, and sometimes I do find him rolled over on hands and knees when I go in there...

Do you think this is a sleep regression? Anyone experienced anything similar? Because I feel like I have tried everything I can possibly think of to no avail...

He's in a good daytime routine, up at 7, bottle, breakfast at 8, sleep at 9, bottle at 11, lunch at 12, nap at 1, etc etc and he has dinner at 5:30, bath and bed by 7pm. He can sleep a good 8 hour stretch without waking and I know if I put him to bed later, he would technically sleep longer, but he absolutely loses the plot around 6pm and I think it would be cruel trying to keep him up when he's so tired.

So yeah... any ideas anyone? Or even just did it happen to you? Will it pass? hehe as I feel like I have tried everything. Im not wanting to do cry it out. In frustration sometimes Ive just left him and gone back to bed, he talks and talks and it gets louder and louder, sometimes he goes back to sleep but sometimes not and it turns to crying..

Sorry hopefully that wasn't too all over the place

Hiya,
I think these type of changes in sleep are really normal. Your little guy is going through lots of changes with learning to move and digest food - and probably starting to make some word like noises. It's a lot for a little one to process. Also around this time they can start having separation anxiety where they wake up and just want to check that you are there.
I would love to say there is a magic formula for getting him sleeping through again - but i think it sounds like you are aware of things like the habit of waking at a certain time, feeding back to sleep and needing to be patted rather than self settling. You can try and work on those things slowly - but to some extent if you don't want to let him cry (which i didn't either) it's just a phase he will go through. He will come out the other side :) Some good ideas are on the TheSleepStore website in the articles section (regarding helping to settle with verbal reassurance, making sure bubs is warm enough etc). Highly recommend a look there :)
I hope he starts sleeping for you again soon, as i know its a draining thing to go through.

If I had a $ for every kid that did this I'd be wealthy! he's totally normal.

At this age their sleep cycles change. He's totally normal. Would second the sleep store stuff on this. We did verbal reassurance which fixed it in three days and DD went back to being a great sleeper (albeit after 4 months of Me hoping it would fix itself, and getting up every hour).

hey i had just been reading that when they are close to crawling they often wake in the nite and practice the skills they are learning... so that is prob what the clever clogs is doing! heres hoping he crawls real soon for you so he can stop practising in his bed! sounds real cute, but must be a pain being woken up so much... i hope E doesn't go through that stage for too long when she gets there!!!
