I hurt my sternum (breastbone) last week by tripping onto the back of a couch. I did some googling on it last night and I'm sure it is not broken (there's no 'popping' or bruising and I can still carry things/people as usual) and no problem with my breathing or my heart. But I think it is sprained because it is quite uncomfortable. There's a general ache as well as exacerbated from lying on my side etc.
Is there any point getting this confirmed medically? It seems whether sprained or broken the Dr's only prescribe rest anyhow. Anyone know?

you could have pulled the intercostal muscles (sp) which hold the ribs and sternum together
in which case antiinflamatories may help to let it all relax and heal, and it helps with the pain too.
I personally would see a Dr and lodge it with ACC as if you did do some real damage its important its lodged with ACC
if your not after pain releif you can bypass the GP and go the physio - they may reccomend some stretches to help it all get back to the 'right place', and they can lodge it with ACC

Thanks MT took the advice to lodge it for ACC purposes and got some anti-inflam prescribed at the same time.
