Ds currently wakes once a night at about 4.30 which I can handle fine. The problem is I start back at work is just over a month and will have to get up at 5.30 to allow time for expressing and getting to work on time. It doesn't seem much point to me to go back to sleep for 30mins (by the time I get back to sleep) so I want to try and get him to sleep through. I'm only going back 2 days a week so its not too bad but with such an early start I really want (need) that extra sleep.
He does seem to need the feed as he can resettle, I've tried to resettle him, I've tried just using water but no matter what he won't go to sleep without that feed. He doesn't go to sleep while I'm feeding him so is awake when I put him back into bed.
Any hints/tips on getting him to sleep through would be fantastic.

Hello ... I am not sure - what time does your LO go to bed? Perhaps you can test putting him to bed either earlier or later to see if that helps?

I'd try getting your DH to go in and resettle him as he'll smell your milk. I know that Plunket say babies should all sleep through at 6 months, but a lot do still need a feed and he may do too. It's rough if it's followed by a 5.30 waking for you though I'd check out the Sleep Store as well

Tough one...

To sleep thru he probably needs tonight wean. Can he settle without a feed at other times?

Do you do a dreamfeed in the late evening?

Can you express during a tea or lunch break and get more sleep in the morning?

I would suggest a dream feed at 10ish pm when you go to bed, then he should be fuller for longer?
but im no expert, my DD still wakes 8ish times a night

He normally goes to bed 7-7.30. Later just means more night wakings and a tired boy the next day, its pretty hard to get him down earlier as he normally just refuses to go to sleep and screams.

Fire_engine, I'm thinking he might be one of the ones that still need a feed overnight but thought I might try anyway.

He normally settles without a feed except for the overnight waking. A dreamfeed means he wakes every 2-3 hrs overnight so I stopped doing it after a week.

I'll be starting work at 7am so will need to express for the morning feed and then again at work for the lunch feed. I'm going to be pushing it time wise to express at work as it is so unfortunately that won't work.

Thanks for the ideas.

Sounds like he is actually sleeping really well for his age. From my experience, some babies really do still need feeding through the night for much longer than 6 months. To be honest, nothing I tried to get mine to sleep through worked until he was a few months past his 2nd birthday. Night-weaning made things worse for us so we went back to feeding.
You will probably also find that his sleep will get better for a while, then get worse, then get better again with different develomental stages, growth spurts, teething etc. What I mean to say is, best of luck for getting him to sleep but but if you can't, it's not that you're doing anything wrong - some babies just need the extra comfort at night.

Could you express at another time of the day? Like morning tea time at work. But before you start work have some EBM in the freezer so you are a day ahead with supplies for DS.

Just a thought as if you are happy enough doing that feed it might be alot of extra stress for you both trying to night wean him at the moment.

Also maybe express off the other side while you are feeding him at 4.30am??

I personally would try on a weekend so starting Friday and Saturday getting DH to go in and settle him which ever way he can so he learns no milk feed or you could do like someone else suggested and try a dream feed at say 10pm and see if that works.
