Totally off the parenting topic, but is there a website or something where you can see ballpark building costs for projects?

I want to put an internal wall up separating my lounge from my dining room but I need to have a vague idea of what it will cost before I get a builder in (so I know if I should rather wait and save more money up).

Has anyone done a similar thing and could give me an idea? I think its about 3 metres.

Could you just call a builder and get a quote? Most of them will do a quote for free, and then you could let them know if you want to go ahead, or if you'll need to wait a while?

I've called 2 that I know and both want to come round to the house first.

Just feels a bit like a pain in the butt when I have no idea if its going to cost a few hundred, a grand, a few grand... kwim?

Last two times someone has come to give a quote on other work they've ended up being there for hours and I dont know if I have the patience

You'll find that most tradesmen will want to see what they have to do before they give a price. I work in the plumbing industry and none of the tradesmen I know will give a price to do anything, without going to site first. It is often very difficult to know exactly what work is involved without seeing it first

Someone correct me if im wrong but it will only be a cosmetic wall non load bearing etc so some framing and some gib sheets and a door shouldnt be too much i wouldnt have thought. Maybe someone has a hubby in building that would like a perky job ???

Just a wall & gib? Or do you want it stopped as well??

Wall, gib & skirting plus Labour approx $650 but allow up to a $1000. This is a rough ball park tired husband estimate & will depend on what you pay for labour.

Thanks guys! The website and rough ballpark figures were exactly what I needed. I'll get DH to do any further research
