We have been given a second hand cot that is a little roughed up and was looking at maybe sanding and staining it. A friend suggested cooking oils as they are baby safe (for any possible chewing on rails) and I had never heard of it before and trusty google doesn't come up with much . Has anyone tried this or know more about it?

I thought that olive oil could go 'off' on things? I could be very very very wrong though so don't take my word for it (gee how helpful am I lol) I remember buying a chopping board and being told not to put olive oil on it and I thought that was why.

That was what I was thinking! Thanks, I think I will just wait and stain it with real stain if I really want it done up..

Panda, you could try using beeswax - it's 100% natural, can be reapplied and doesn't go off or feel sticky. You can get it from http://www.woodzone.co.nz/default.asp?pageno=0 - Woodzone , just send them an e-mail.
