This group has been set up on facebook to campaign to save St Georges Maternity ward. (This was damaged and closed after the February earthquake, for those reading this who are not in CHCH :)). It would seem that the
DHB is moving towards not finding new facilities for the ward claiming that the other units are coping. Coping equalling sending women home only hours after birth and sending c/s mums home after only 48 hours sometimes less. This to me is understandable under current circumstances but totally wrong as a long term plan. Midwifes are asking that the women of Canterbury make their voices heard over this as they are being ignored.

Sorry chick, you won't. They've been looking for a reason to shut it down for ages - never spent any money upgrading it as that area of the hospital doesn't make any money. My sister who is now 30 weeks has been given the option of Lincoln or Rangiora - both ages away from her but being a first time mum she needs that time.

I do agree however that they need something - they can't spread it over the other units as there's not enough room, but it makes no money for anyone to want to pick up a maternity hospital. There's a lot of earthquake babies being born soon - another baby boom from the Feb one too I bet - and they need to go somewhere :(

I was given the option of Lincoln or Rangiora after I had my little girl, but I went home and was quite stressed about it, as she was 2 weeks early. My DH was on crutches at the time, plus we have our 2 year old DS, so it wasn't viable to go so far out as DH couldn't drive and I certainly wasn't catching a taxi. As it was, we had to call a taxi to get to the hospital and it was $30, we only live 10 mins away from CWH, but due to the damaged road etc, it took 30 mins!! I was booked to go to St Georges, so it sucked it was damaged. I went there after DS was born, and it was great.
All the maternity units in the Chch area, except CWH, are rundown and have not been upgrade in decades, it's quite a disgrace! I will join the fb group

(P.S. I had DD at 2.44pm and was out the door by 6pm.)

Burwood has reopened now so that is another option but I'm guessing as that is the only one in christchurch now that it fills up quicker than Rangiora and Lincoln. I've stayed at Burwood and Rangiora and they are older and need a spruce up but the care was great.
I would be happy to go home early this time with it being my third and if I don't have a c/s (did with my first) but I really think first time mums need that time and even when it is your second or third or more it's still nice to have some time to get to know your baby before you are back into all the madness and demands of being at home.

WestiesGirl the building has been condemned and is going to be demolished (or may have been done already not been pass that way for a while), so unless they find alternate facilities to start up in then it's not gonna happen. I know a mw who was working there who the DHB has doing parking duties at present

Its actually a big mess at the moment. MW's working within St G's and also alot of the board are keen to keep St G's going but the head is not.

It makes no money as its an essential service so is much like a school in that respect meaning that to rebuild is a huge cost.

My MIL works at St G's and is also on the MW council so I get some info from her about whats going on. TBH its having a huge impact on independent MW's to the point that alot of experienced MW's will probably retire if they have to keep travelling like they are.

The only reason they have MW's etc working on car parking duty is because there is a stand off. At this point redunancy has not been offered, I presume they are hoping they will resign so union action is to take any work they get given and stick to it until redunacy is offered.

Boo! What a shame for both the hospital and the MW's. I agree that its really important for longer stays for first time mums particularly. Im pleased Burwood is open cos that is my next preference. My sister was transfered there and loved it.

Yep definitely sucks they aren't going to look at opening anything else.
I had our DS at 4.10am and was home by 4 th same day, i did have to stay for awhile due to having spinal and he had trouble breathing when he was born, but with a 3.5yr old and a 19month old, wasn't the best, especially since DH had to go to work that day, thank god i had my mum, but you do kind of expect to be able to stay somewhere after giving birth....
Am definitely keen to join FB group and spread the word
