OK so its come to crunch time where I really need to change my ways and get some of this weight off for my own health reasons (not just vanity)

Question is has anyone ever heard of the Cohen's Diet???  I just rang and going for a presentation tomorrow but to me it sounds very similar to the Sure Slim diet.  I thought that was dodgey so wonder if this is the same or is better?

Apparently its based on hormone levels and tailored to your hormones.  My weight gain and lack of losing it is very much due to hormone's with polycystic ovary etc but I don't want to spend money on a money making fad..........I want a serious result!!

So anyone who knows about this good or bad please share your info.

TIA

I don't know anything about it - but I can HIGHLY recommend weight watchers! Its not a 'fad' and its more about changing your eating and life habits for good, not just so you can lose some weight and then put it back on. Anyway - just wanted to put my 2cents in.

I think it is a long the same lines as Sure Slim. You are very restricted in what you can eat. I had a friend who knew someone on SS & they were hungry all the time. Think it is around $800-1000, not sure.

I have hear it does work if you are determined & stick to it. Basically it is a very strict diet so be prepared to feel deprived & hungry.

I don't think I could do it

You could just put yourself on a strict diet if thats all it is but I wouldnt .. you cant maintain a strict diet forever, so its a waste of time and money.

I was just talking to my hairdresser about this the other week. I had neer heard of it. She recommends it highly! She lost just oer 20kg in about 4 months I think and she looks great. Said it has been life changing for her. One of her clients had lost oer 50 kg on it.
She did say due to the earthquake her and her client didn't do the "coming down" or whateer its called once you'e lost your goal weight so thinks it's not necessary as long as you hae done all the right things and continue on that path.
The only thing she didn't like about it was haing to gie up alcohol! - but her husband had just had a heart attack so it worked out well as she had a non drinking buddy!
Sorry I hae no first hand experience but I hae seen the results!

not from what I have read...it basically keeps you above starvation point so you can burn stored fat & keeps carbs very low or at a minimum.

To me normal is eating everything & anything just in moderation...not what you can do easy on most diets except for WW & JC.

Yeah it is like that Jazzy just above starvation point for the first week anyway ya do feel pretty guttered when ya serving up dinner and yours doesnt even fill a saucer plate and DH fills the dinner plate right up! Crabs are at the min and no milk was a bit strainge???? However it does work really well and quickly with no exercise so I guess it depends on how commited you are? They send you lot's of creative ideas on how to make things pretty tasty tho Biggest thing is the price $1000 That makes ya stay pretty dedicated I tell ya!

$1000 for starving yourself??? What do you get for that?

I don't understand why anyone would want to not exercise to lose weight? If you exercise and eat less you will lose weight full stop. That doesn't cost you anything and it's (hopefully) sustainable.

what they say about the exercise is carry on with what you do but if you do none then don't add it as it will make you more hungry & the plan that is designed for you takes that into account.

I can understand why people would do this as the results can be fantastic. Don't think I would have the will power to do it.

Topkat you had an amazing result did you have any side effects? Does the $1000 cover all the blood tests?

Sounds to me..

If you had loads of weight to loose and didn't do exercise you wouldn't be toned afterwards and have loose wobbly skin

The people I know that have done this diet have been very overweight and not exercising at all to begin with. So they NEED to lose a shedload to be healthy and need to be extreme about it IYGWIM. They have already tried the healthy eating/moderate exercise thing and it hasn't worked for them (and it doesn't always work for everyone).

I know three people here in Singapore who have done it with support from their GP and had huge success. All three have kept the weight off and now they're at a healthy weight they've added in some exercise/eating more normally.

Yeah, for starters I'm only little around 57kg, pre preg and only had 15kg to loose from pregnacy weight. So I didnt have lot's of skin etc to tone. I'm quite short.
I paid $850 but that was a couple of years ago and Ive herd it is now up to $1000 still alot of money to pay.

The no exercise was not why I decided it was right for me as i was already doing small amounts eg: riding horse walking etc. But my mums friens results were really amazing and she had tried everything. I guess I needed help with motivation so the support was great daily phone calls etc I guess I could have got that through jenny craig weight watches etc.

This is good as you loose weight fast and safely under watchfull eyes of a dr and it resets your hormones which is good after baby. You don't need to do exercise but if you want to you can it's just you will burn energy you wont have a feel very low

Hey thanks guys for all your responses

I find exercise very very difficult with my breathing and this hasn't helped with my weight either but I do walk and I'm about to take swimming lessons so once I have my confidence in the pool I will get in there.

But yeah to lose a lot of weight without added exercise is appealing and then hopefully my breathing will improve and I can exercise more.  I used to be a runner but hated long distance........now that I can't do it I wish like anything that I could go for a nice long run..........the irony of it

The breathing.. is that because of being unfit or asthma or something?

Losing 15kg in a month doesn't sound overly healthy to me... then again, maybe I'm just skeptical of a quick fix when it comes to weight loss... I dunno... I'd tend to go for a slow and steady approach, much more likely to be good in the long-term...

I think this diet would be a good alternative to surgery. You would need incredible will power but I guess paying that amount of money will help.

What is the breathing problem related to?
I went to the Dr yrs ago prior to having DS1 (10yr now) & was told I had a breathing problem, I ended up going to a private clinic paying heaps to learn to breath properly. I had several attacks as the Dr called it & when I was pg it was worse. With my 3rd pg they found I had gallstones which was the reason for my so called breathing problems. It was also triggered when dieting.

Mine stems from my childhood.  I had many operations around my vocal chords which unfortunately has left alot of scarring.  This makes my airway about half the size of a normal adult.  Therefore as I grew my airway didn't so exercise became very hard for me.

Being an impressionable young teenager I was told by a specialist not to do my running etc as I was placing too much strain on my body heart rate wise etc so I stopped.

Then I got polycystic ovary (which isn't really an excuse I suppose) and piled on the weight  and so any form of exercise became harder so I did less...............you can see the vicious circle I'm going into here can't you.

I do regret that I listened to that specialist and at the time stopped exercise but drinking and boys was the main focus then .

Anyhoo even walking round the block makes people stare at me cause I'm loud with my breathing even though I'm used to it and I'm fine............I think they think I"m going to carck it!!! haha

However I know I have to shift butt and do something now especially if I want to have another baby.

Sorry about the long novel lol

You could do swimming with a flutterboard. It burns calories really well and gives you a really good butt and leg work out as well as working your core. Keep ya head above water so you can suck in air constantly. You shouldn't get puffed from it. If your feeling good you could kick faster if your feeling not too great just take it easy but its good exercise. I did it while preg up until I had Alex and so my lungs were really squished from him especially when he was breached and it was great.

Pay me a grand, I'll starve you.

And Jazzy some of us eat like that normally and do exercise as well, hence my seeing as it as normal eating.

Buttersmum I think you could go into the chch office and talk to the consultant. They will let you know if it's right for you.

It's really hard being overweight, and since exercise will be hard for you this would be a great diet.....I feel.

They have a great wedsite also.

Everyone is different and everyone has different results from all diets this is not a diet it is a lifestyle change for good. I'm letting you know that I tried it and it worked really well for me. you won't fail as you have great suport and they will stick by you even if it takes you a year.

Buttersmum before doing this diet you need to work out how much you have to lose, how long you have to lose it & your will power. This diet my work fast & it does help you to get back into eating normally again after it but some of the side effects are missing periods, hair loss, you will lose muscle & your metabolism will change which may make it difficult to maintain the weight loss once you are back to eating regularly & properly.

I think the only diets that can really help if you need support are WW or JC as you are eating real food & you get either 1 on 1 or group support.

Walking is a great exercise that you can do anywhere & you can start with low impact & work your way up.

Normal eating is being able to eat what ever without cutting out food groups & types, it is eating small amounts regularly but thanks to diets abnormal eating is seen as normal & it becomes that way due to routine & plans.

Kebakat that's a great idea.  I'm doing swimming lessons next term so will be looking at doing stuff like that.  I never did swimming as I had a tracheostomy (basically a hole in my throat) as a kid so couldn't swim of course

I have never been in water over my head so once I gain the confidence that is the sort of thing I'm looking at doing exercise wise.

You guys have been awesome with your advice and support.  Nice to be able to ask these things without getting flack or anything.  Thanks heaps

Would you consider Jenny Craig as an option? The reason I ask is my DH had been struggling to loose weight recently and he is a fairly high level footballer and with the season just around the corner he needed to move the weight and fast. He started JC only 9 weeks ago and has dropped 18kgs and is starting on maintaining in the next few weeks.

His problem was what he was eating and how much he was eating as in he wasn't eating nearly enough food to function effectively, so everything he was eating his body was storing as fat.

I would totally recommend it if you want a good kick start and to see instant results. They are also very helpful at encouraging movement, even if its just small walks etc (although that wasn't necessary in DH's case, for it wasn't the lack of exercise that was his problem).

Good luck with your journey

You wouldn't even need swimming lessons really for flutterboard, just hold it with your hands right out in front of you and kick

I did sureslim 3 years ago and lost 25kg, but gained 10 back. Sounds like a similar diet to this one.

The pro for me was that it leveled my hormones and I went from af only every 5 months or so to monthly on the dot and helped with my journey in getting pregnant.

Con was that it was to fast to be that healthy and it was a bit like starvation. Also with that I got bad headaches and never felt that satisfied. I paid $900 and the food for the diet was mega expensive and not all found in our small local supermarket.

I can't complain fully though as even though I don't follow that plan now, I am much healthier than I use to be and af still regular so it definitely sorted that side of things out.

I'm starting WW in next couple of weeks which I'm looking forward to cause I can still buy the foods I usually do, but it will just keep everything in moderation.

Topkat would love to try Cohen program and I see you are doing it post baby. Was wondering about breastfeeding and the program. I have alot of weight to lose and everywhere I go to get advise they say you cant breastfeed and diet...so hard as I want to breastfeed but don't want to have to stay overweight until baby is over six months??
