Obviously clarification is needed, separating a child as in putting them in a separate room has been a no-no for years as far as I'm concerned (I'm an ec teacher). But not being able to take them away from a group is just stupid.
I think religious stuff shouldnt be crammed down their throats but at the same time celebrating xmas etc is part of nz culture so I don't see why they cant learn about it even if they aren't Christian, just like it would be good to learn about other religions celebrations. I guess if your sending your kid to a religious school they're going to learn about jesus etc.

Hmmm.... its been a few years (as in 2 and a bit) but my son was (and still is!) one of those kids that NEEDS to be seperated from other children as he gets so hell bent on continuing what HE wants to do, that the only way to get him to stop and listen is remove him from the area/kids involved. If this kind of policy became 'law' over here, there'd be kids running rings around already overworked daycare staff!! I find the majority of that article absolute bollocks!
I like what someone said under that article, toddlers dont have the mental capacity to listen to reasoning! As for the easter/xmas tree part... is there some reason why they are systematically pulling away all the stuff that kids find excitement in?! Who here didnt help decorate a tree in the lead-up to xmas, or go on an easter egg hunt, or put their baby teeth under a pillow to get money... (ok, so the last part isnt a religious thing, but bugger me, will 'fantasy' beliefs be the next thing they outlaw?!) ------------- Brandon - 05/12/2003

| i can kinda understand. aus has a huge amount of immigrants, many of which are not christian. and if i read correctly, it was saying that workers would be breaching the law if children were REQUIRED to help, rather than allowed to help if they wanted. i would hope that would be the case. |

Lol, I think the article has made the issue out to be more contentious than it actually is. No surprises there.
All they are calling for is greater clarification on the regulations. As they are, they are more open to interpretation than they should be. The religious aspect is nothing new. We had a Jehovah's Witness in our class at intermediate who's parents requested that he not participate in the classroom Christmas party etc, he did something else instead on that day - that is their right and so it should be! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Yea, I'm with ytou, gypsynita - there's not much of any kind of religeon in an easter egg hunt or a Christmas tree really. I mean, they'll both have meaning to some people, but to most they're just a bit of fun for the kids. It would be sad to lose that! And I say that as a Christian who has no issue with either.

Decorating a Christmas tree only dates to around medieval times when Christianity was already well established. The timing of Christmas has Pagan links, but the decorating of a tree doesn't :0) Pah! to over~the~top PCness :0) |

Hopes your PC has actually gone mad
I joke that i'm going to pretend that Xmas doesnt exist so i never have to buy all the presents for DS but i will really be kind of sad if they don't do an Xmas play at the end of the year that i can go watch. Or if i never get one of those crappy 'stained glass' cellophane xmas cards from him. eta now ive read the article properly it says they cant require children to take part which i agree with. optional xmas/easter is cool, the majority of kids will be into it but at least there will be an alternative for those who arent for religious or whatever reason. etta my teacher used to make us stand outside or run a lap of the field. probably not cool should be cornered in the class so s/he has an eye on them still but the field running thing really did help for the over active hypo kid! release some energy and all. |
