I know there are a few mums who post here who have children who've had their adenoids / tonsils removed. Did any of your children have difficulties swallowing food pre surgery - as a symptom of enlarged adenoids? DD is 15 months and chokes (not gags) on some fairly odd solids - like crusket or soft hot chips. It happens once a week or so and I'm starting to wonder whether that might be the issue given that she has a history of recurrent ear infections etc. Edited for grammar. |

Hi Happymumma, my DD is booked in to see specialist re having her tonsils removed next week.
My DD is only 15 months to and her tonsillitis reoccurs usually only a week after her previous lot of antibiotics have finished. She gags, chokes and throws up quite a bit. We have gone back to mashed foods mostly. She still likes to try and eat things herself, but its not the same. We have issues with drinking cause she doesn't like the feeling of gulping and swallowing so often refuses water and milk to. What are the adenoids? That sounds so like parts of our history. Last year every second week she refused to drink and whenever we saw a Doctor (which was lots!) they said it was likely due to pain from tonsils. Hmmm...we are under an ENT who knows that history so I wonder if he is just not keen on removing them until they are older. DD manages things like toast most of the time but yet chokes on things like banana, cruskit and chips so it seems to be the slightly softer stuff for her. Some days I would be happy just giving her mashed things! Ok - that makes me feel more justified in my concern. Ta! |

Just thinking anatomically (as I'm sure you did!) - wouldn't surprise me if the adenoids are stuffing the swallow up a bit. ------------- Mum to two wee boys |

That's what I'm thinking Fire_Engine. We are seeing the GP next week but I can't help feeling I ought to be dicsussing it with the ENT. It would explain a lot - but then I also wonder why none of the health professionals we've seen have come to that conclusion. I had a CPR update this week and they trainer said that on the basis of my description of her 'choking' I probably ought to be calling 111 each time - that completely freaked me out!! |

Not really but I think I might tomorrow. ETA: I have only just put it all together myself. I have always thought there was something more than just her not wanting to drink but this would make a lot of sense. |

I will definitely get specialist to check my DD's adenoids now to. I have noticed she breathes her mouth a lot now when sleeping and sometimes when swallowing it sounds really horrid like she has swallowed a lump and she cringes.
