Hey, we have been looking at in-home care for Morgan one day a week (they are in daycare 2 days and dh has been looking after them the other day I work) as Jake is in kindy that day and we'd like to keep him at the kindy. The lady I have spoken to yesterday was keen on having Jake too, but said she would charge for the hours he is in kindy. He goes to a private kindy so we are paying for those hours at kindy too. so we would pay 3.55/hr to kindy and 5.30/hr to her and she wouldn't have him!
Is this normal for in-home care? (Shes thru Jemmas) And can they legally charge you when you sign a form with both kindy and Jemmas stating they are not in another ECE for those hours??? Just seems a bit off to me!!!!! ------------- DS (5yrs) and DD (3yrs) |

No, haven't called them - I was introduced to her through a friend as she cares for her son and they all go to the same kindy (her DD and my friends DS and Jake). I just wanted to know if it was normal? I understand she is "running a business and could have another child in that spot for those hours" but to be paid 5.30/hr for 3 kids for 3 hours and them all be in kindy - sounds a bit cheeky to me!! ------------- DS (5yrs) and DD (3yrs) |

When I looked into homecare a while ago I was told that they may charge for the time that the kids are at kindy as they would be the first emergency contact and therefore still responsible for the child. I kind of see their point but is still a bit cheeky I think ------------- Lindsey

i think you will find that is illegal.. two places cant get the hours at the same time.. its even complicated if you split hours between people.. my son used to do in home care an kindy and she doesn't charge.. and i had to sign a form saying only kindy had those hours and the at home carer had the other times.. sounds like she is having you on..she can have another child in those hours because your child isn't with her.. really cheeky if you ask me..I'm pretty sure it's not allowed at all. ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

In an in-home carer and I wouldn't charge while they're at kindy - though I may ask for an extra fee for pick-up/drop-off (cos it is a bit of a hassle, especially with other kiddies).

Well our carer doesn't charge for the hours but barnados who she is through actually think we should (I offered to pay but the carer said no), the thing with Kindy is they shut during school holidays so then the carer would have your child and effectively you are paying for her to keep that spot open rather than have another child there and you not have care when your kindy is closed.
I had no qualms about paying our carer and paying the kindy for exactly this reason, but then I'm lucky as she refused to take the money. The only thing is you would only be able to claim the 20 free hours for one place, you can split the hours you can claim across more than one place, we do this, but you can't claim the same hours for two places at the same time. -------------

This is a good point. If you're expecting her the have the kids in the school holidays, then yeah I would expect to pay for while the kids are at kindy. I have a lesser rate for a "scheduled absence", which is basically to keep the place open. When my kids were in homebased care we weren't charged for Ollie while he was in kindy - I also think it's a bit cheeky TBH. We do pay for mileage for drop off/pick up which is understandable.
When we signed the contract for homebased care, we were able to stipulate whether care was required for school holidays etc (obviously this had been discussed with the carer first) so we were able to change hours if necessary. ------------- DS 8 DD 6 DS 4 DD 2 |

that is totally true..but i just assumed most people wouldnt expect her to have them in school holidays..if that is the case then that is true..but you can't claim the 20 free hours in two places.... sorry yes what i said before i mean you cant 20 hours claim in two places at once for the same hours but i guess she can charge it if she likes but you shouldn't have to pay when the child isn't in her care.. even if i was at work i would still be the emergency contact.. yeah i never thought about that (the holidays thing as i wouldnt send them then ) i still wouldnt want to pay though as its wasted money except in holidays.. !:) though i do agree with mileage ! ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

I would not object to paying for mileage, or a pick up type fee, or even if she said she wouldn't have him in the holidays over those hours .... but I think its the principle really, I don't think I should have to pay if hes not there (I would still be emergency contact). I'd accept a reduced fee for those hours though to keep the place I guess.
