Hi,

DS2 is a mega sleepy feeder and i'm looking for tips to how to get him to take more from me, I have tried getting him naked etc.............. but no matter what its hard to get him to keep his eyes open whilst on the boob, as soon as I take him off sometimes he'll wake get cross want more other times he just falls asleep, but that doesn't last.

I also think it might be affecting my supply as he isn't taking as much as could????????

How long should I make him stay on each side, its almost like after let down its just far too much like hard work

You may have already tried this but when in hospital trying to feed DS, he was the same and the MW on duty got me to wet a flannel with cold water and rub it on his forehead when his eyes got droopy - it sure kept him awake

DD is a sleepy feeder too, and when I try and use any tricks to wake her up a bit she starts flinging her head around and growling while my nipple is still clamped between her gums

DS was a shocker for it. I would feed one side and as he started looking sleepy i'd talk to him, rub the soles of his feed or tickle his cheek. I would change his nappy after the first side and then repeat a for the second side.
A lot of the time he woulfnt take a whole feed though and we would end up repeating the whole process 45min later

He is sleepy full stop, makes him easy to settle in some ways at the mo, when I really can't wake him I put him down and it lasts sometimes, but getting a boob feed into him is taking me at least an hour with getting him undressed, dressed, change nappy, pull off wiggle about put back on and I am just finding it tricky to balance this with another kid racing around, I will keep trying

Ollie was exactly the same for the first month. I struggled to wake him up all the time. Don't forget his tummy is tiny, and the let down might be all he needs if you have a good milk supply.

Keep at it - it does get easier!

If you rub the palm of their hand in a circular motion that can get them sucking - the palm is connected to their sucking motion some how.
My son used to wake up and suck more vigorously when i touched his nose, i called it his go button!

hehe this is what my girl does, ouchies! ooh i'll have to try those two tricks, the hand one and the nose one, my daughter sounds just like your bubby fiona, then when i will put her to bed when she is in dreamland she can sometimes wake in half hour hungry cause she didnt feed for long enough!

If she's putting on weight and not wanting to be fed every hour maybe her suction is really good anyway and she's getting enough milk? Is a worry tho all this BFing, certainly isn't easy!

Is tricky have tried more things today but nope he cannot stay awake on the boob, if I then try and put him down he just wakes up wants more, back on boob one suck and asleep, useless.

I am concerned about whether I have enough milk and he sucks like crazy gets what he can and then just suckles - how can I tell - gah 2nd time round BF is still a total mystery.

Do you get sleepy when you get letdown?

It may just mean you have high levels of prolactin which makes you relaxed and in the higher level cases can put you straight off to sleep, and it will pass to him through your milk.

Thats my only thought on this subject as getting babies to wake up when they don't want to is HARD!
