Turns out a friends daughter has been diagnosed with CP, and we were at a baby shower on Saturday together... is there immunity in NB from colostrum, or within a certain timeframe from birth that a baby has the same antibodies as mum etc?? Really dont want D getting CP so young!!

I'm not 100% sure, but DS1, DD & DH had CP at the start of this year and neither DS2 or I got it. I suspect I may have some natural immunity (I've never had CP) and I think I passed it on to DS2 via BM. I have no medical evidence to back this up though, it's just what I suspect. FX'd he doesn't get them!

Same as mummydee. I don't have any science to back it up but I reckon there would be some immunity from breast milk. I went to a wedding with my tiny 6 week old daughter (who was 6 1/2 weeks prem) and one of our cousins had a good long cuddle. As she was passing her back she told me all her kids were at home because they had chicken pox! So I anxiously waited the 21 days but no pox to be had. Fingers crossed your bub will be fine.

DD got CP last year when DS was 9 months old. He was still bf day and night. The GP said that babies dont get CP often and cos he is bf he shouldt get it. When I rang healthline about the CP on the inside of DD's eyelid, the nurse laughed when I told her what the dr had said about how baby wont get it. She said HE WILL GET IT!,...and he did. He was miserable poor thing.

But that was from his sister- there were lots of people that DD was in contact with at a party and coffee group and music before she got CP,and none of them got it.

Incubationis around 10 days from exposure.

Mum always tells me my little brother got CP at a few weeks old and he was fully breast fed but i don't think its common. Hope he doesn't get them

It's less likely, but then it depends on whether you have had chicken pox, cos if you haven't then you won't have the antibodies to pass on.
CP is generally milder the younger you get it and exposure doesn't mean you will get it. When I had CP my sis didn't get it, she caught it a few years later. And recently my friends 3.5 year old got it but her 1 year never caught it, he's still breastfed so maybe that helped, or maybe he had it but without symptoms, which can happen especially in very young children as they get such a mild version of it. But also my children didn't get it and neither did any of the others at our coffee group even though they had all been around him when he was contagious.

My DS got CP at 5 months old and he was exclusively BF. I didnt end up with it so not sure if I've had it before or if I have natural immunity.

Good luck, I hope D is ok and doesnt get them.

ETA we still dont know where DS caught them from as we wernt around anyone with the CP that we knew.

I'm not sure tbh, DD was exposed to CP a few weeks back at the medical centre, she got 2 suspicious looking spots but turns out they were itchy bites and not CP! I've had chicken pox and we're still BFing, she never got it though (after being exposed I mean). FX he gets some immunity from your milk, if you are worried - talk to midwife? Gp? Nurse? I know you can get a vaccine for it as it was discussed at playcentre on Monday

I would give 0800 IMMUNE a call and ask them. The nurses there are great.

DS and I got exposed when he was a few weeks old. Doctor said that if he was under 6 months and exclusively breastfed, it is unlikely that he will get it. it isn't a complete no (but even if you've had it before or are vax, it's not a complete no anyway), and if you FF or do top-ups, the immunity isn't as strong ...
