Hi,
I'm pretty sure my son has quite a severe allergy to milk/dairy. When he was about 7 months old, he had a teaspoon of porridge that was made with milk. His face swelled up (looked like he had 2 x black eyes!) he started choking and having trouble breathing. I rushed him to the docs (thankfully just around the corner)and after a lot of vomit, he was fine. Needless to say, we avoided milk/dairy while he was starting solids. At about 9/10 months I gave him a piece of cheese to try (as I'd heard is usually just milk that can cause a bad reaction) and just the contact with his skin was enough to make him all red and itchy, so that was a no no. He's now 11 months and for his lunch today I gave him a 'vanilla custard'. 'Milk soilds' was the last ingredient listed, (mainly apple juice and ground rice)so I thought it would be OK. I was very wrong. After he'd finished, his face went bright red and he started coughing and choking. He vomited three times and after that, he was fine. 20mins later he was scooting about the floor getting up to mischief! I've made an appointment with the doctor, as I'd like to get some allergy testing done, to see if there's anything else I need to look out for. Despite him having such a bad reaction the 1st time, I really thought he'd grow out of it quite quickly, but I guess this may go on for years rather than months. The odd thing is that he's breastfed and I eat dairy and it has no ill effects on him ??? Any advise, or has anyone been through something similar? |

Usually when bfing they react to the amount in your bm as well so that is quite interesting.
Your doctor will be able to get skin prick tests done. Don't let them fob you off with oh they don't work for kids under 2yo. By reaction by touching cheese imo would warrant the tests done. ------------- Kel http://lilypie.com">

Both my boys have significant allergies that haven't shown up if I ate them while breastfeeding, but definately when they ate them or came into contact with their skin.
Make sure your G.P does get the tests done, they don't really do skin prick tests on under 2's any more, they prefer to do a blood test called a RAST test. ------------- http://www.alterna-tickers.com">

My son is allergic to a few things - I thought he didn't react through my breast milk but looking back now there were a few things going on which could've been caused by the foods (green poos, quite unsettled, didn't sleep well etc).
Anyway, like the others said definitely get some allergy tests done. If you've got health insurance for your boy going to an allergy specialist might be a good idea - not sure where you are but we go to Rohan Ameratunga in Auckland (when I say 'go to' - we don't actually go to him very often, most of our appointments are over the phone as we are in Hastings). My son is 2 and has just grown out of a mild egg allergy and hasn't outgrown the milk allergy yet, though we are hopeful that in another 6 months he will have. Just to give an idea of how long it's taken for us. We were advised by the specialist that completely avoiding the allergen would help him outgrow it more quickly. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

The other funny thing is that he had horrid eczema when he was younger, but dairy (in my BM) didn't effect him. You'd think it would be connected wouldn't you. How do you ensure they're getting enough calcium? It's like this I'm glad I breastfeed. I always planned on nursing till around the 18month mark, but if his allergy lasts longer, I think I'll just continue as long as I need to. So long as he's happy to continue too of course

My daughter has the same reaction if she comes in contact with anything egg related. Recently a little friend of hers touched her after eating a cracker with egg in it and she came out in a welts on her wrist!
With a reaction that severe he may never grow out of it. A little girl we know had a similar reaction when she was a 6 month old with custard and is now 15 and has very serious reactions (carries an epi pen at all times) to about a dozen different things. My daughter had her first skin prick test done at 15 months and I have the forms on my fridge for my son to get his done in the next few weeks for the same allergy. So yes i agree with the comment of not letting them fob you off. With my daughter I had to fight to get her tested and ended up telling the doctor I wouldn't leave unless he gave me the forms. Hi there, Like what everyone is saying, Get the skin prict test done. My son had it done ajust after he turned one (found out he was allergic to dairy). He had another one done 2 weeks ago (6 months later and now he is allergic to diary and peanuts) . Like your son, my son doesn't seem to react to dairy i eat as Im still breastfeeding him too. I have also started giving him Neocate. I worry about him not getting enough calcium too but Necoate is really good (My son takes about 300ml a day inc milk in his cereal) And Im seeing Dr Rohan next week for the first time as well so maybe you can go see him too. I've heard really good things about him... There is a month wait with Dr Rohan, its about $325 for a first consultation but if you have a medical insurance, it shouldn't be too bad..
