Hi everyone. One of my husband's coworkers was in hospital on the Wednesday following the earthquake with his wife. She had gone into prematuve labour at 26 weeks. Their little girl is doing great but I would love to be able to give them some prem clothes for their little girl. Does anyone have any prem clothes they would want to donate?

So nice of you to want to help out. They won't really need clothes at this stage. If you wanted to get them a gift perhaps something like a special blanket for when bub comes out for kangaroo cuddles (ideally not polar fleece) or a special journal/diary for them to record their NICU journey. Hot meals and housework are always appreciated too =) -------------

I agree with Hot meals, when my DD was 5 weeks old and in hospital meals weren't provided to us and DD was too young for a meal so she didn't get one either and being only 5 weeks I couldn't exactly leave her, esp as she was on the childrens ward not NICU. I definitely recommend meals as they will both be wanting to spend time with her and buying meals from the hospital or near by can be so expensive!
I diary or blanket is a nice idea too!

I've got a bag of prem clothes which you are more than welcome to have to give them but as Mrs_B said bubba won't be wearing clothes for several weeks - until she can maintain her own body temperature and is able to come out of the incubator.
Then the NICU will have loads of clothes they will use once she is in a cot and to be honest it's a pain trying to keep track of your own baby clothes whereas the NICU stuff just gets chucked into a laundry basket & washed. A nice idea for a gift if you knit or if someone you know can knit for you, is woollen singlets. I can dig out the pattern we used if you'd like - the singlets were the single best thing anyone gave me for my prem girls. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Good ideas everyone! I didn't realise about meals. Have just found out they've been transferred to Wellington (probably to clear up space in the Chch hospital) so shall have a think about what to do. ------------- http://tickers.cafemom.com">

we have some bigger prem clothes, but baby won'tneed them till she goes home... and she could even be newborn size then, ours very nearly was! things like cardigans (pure wool) would be good as they need to have a few days to regulate their temperate at home and get quite cold. I agree with the woolen singlet idea too - ones with buttons down the front much easier for tiny babies as when little they don't like things pulled over their head much. also lots of little cloth squares very handy for bibs!

I did a bit of a google search and found these guys ( http://www.urbanharvest.co.nz/fresh-food - Urban Harvest ). They appear to deliver food including hot and frozen meals in Wellington. You might be able to order something and get it delivered to them whereever they are staying or to the hospital ------------- Lindsey

My girls were at Hutt SCBU & Waikato NICU and there was a parent's lounge with microwave etc.
Welly hospital is brand spanking new so I imagine their facilities would def include a kitchen for parents. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I think they will probably have a kitchen facility as I've been in a few areas of Wellington hospital, though not the NICU, but they all seem to have little lounges with microwaves, fridges, etc. And if she can access the Ronald McDonald Room she'll have it there too.
I definitely recommend meals though because they have a lot of cafe's around which are expensive and there is the hospital cafe which is expensive and the nearest fast food is McDs from memory about 10mins down the road. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I have been in Chch NICU it is awesome The staff are all so lovely. The have clothes there for the babies to wear really nice ones too!
There is a parents lounge with microwave free hot drinks toast etc. They have a few rooms you can stay in when establishing BF they are really nice double bed and ensuite (more like hotel than hospital)they let DH stay too as twins need two parents! Only I got the meals though and they were way better than our local hospitals. Food would be a nice gift. |

Welly Neonates is awesome. We were there last year with out little man. They have rooming in rooms, kitchenette and tv room. The nurses are so nice too. They also have a huge cupboard of baby clothes, they perfer the babies to wear the hospitals just encase your own gets lost. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I was in Wgtn NICU with Abi (remember?) ... they definitely have microwaves in the parents area for them to use, they are probably staying in Ronald McDonald House as I know that's where the parents from out of town normally stay - and I think that they provide meals over there? At 26 weeks they will be in hospital for quite a while - sometimes when they come out they wont need prem clothes. food is important as they dont feed you and you need to expressing. A supermarket voucher would be good as then they can buy the food they need. there is a new world just down the road. -------------  http://lilypie.com">
