I'll say. I would be p'd off if I had one or had giver one to someone. Boarders also as they are the same.
The kids got book vouchers for xmas but you could use them at lots of shops, don't think vouchers are the way to go any more as you never know what trouble a company could be in till too late.

We often give my SIL Whitcoulls vouchers, I so won't be doing that again.

That's twice in the last month we've been stung with vouchers, we have a $50 Whitcoulls one sitting in my wallet (we don't have a Whitcoulls close by) and I lost $200 when Total Experience folded just after Christmas. I'm NEVER buying vouchers again, and any I get will be spent within a week of receiving them!

gutted to see that people were sold gift vouchers YESTERDAY, and can't redeem them or refund them today.

Yikes! DD was given a voucher by her grandfather for Christmas which she hasn't had a chance to spend yet!

the only voucher type thing I would say is safe is the visa pressie card from nzpost.

I went into our one and asked to buy a voucher and they didnt tell me anything about the new rules - you'd think that would be the least they could do. I didnt buy one of course but was curious as to what they would say.
Sucks that whitcoulls/borders are closing down though, books are going out of fashion.

One of NZ's leading retail icons may be closing down and over 2000 people may lose their jobs and people are worried about their precious vouchers?

They're not closing down, they're in voluntary administration. That means they're trying to trade their way out of trouble.

Apparently, due to their business model, they borrowed too much money and now can't pay it back - it's not cos people don't buy books anymore, just bad business management!

that just doesnt make any sense.... if i went in and bought a $20 book - they wouldnt tell me i have to buy another $20 book to be able to buy the first one? they already have the money for nothing... so when its redeemed, it gets allocated...?

I agree. Even if Whitcoulls don't close down there will almost certainly be quite a few job loses. And aslo remember it is not just the Whitcoulls staff that are affected....all their suppliers would be affected as well (especially the smaller ones) as I imagine at lot of them haven't been paid for their Christmas stock and rely on them for future business.

Given their financial situation we should probably be lucky they are redeeming gift vouchers at all. I know it sucks and they should have stopped selling vouchers earlier but there is a lot more at stake here.

Things have been very tight at the company for quite a while now (I used to work for them at national level) and I can't believe the senior managment team let things get this out of control. I really feel for all of the staff at the moment

sorry for the novel

Friend at my baby shower today was telling me that a friends hubby got given $500 worth of vouchers and now cant afford to redeem them, thats really on the nose of them to say there are 'new' conditions to redeeming them, they've already got the cash without handing any products over for it, and now they are saying you get a discount, NOT the actual value?! This is why I dont like giving gift vouchers for particular stores, never know whats going to happen in the (generally) 12 months you get to redeem it.
