Im wanting some idea's please 
It's DS first birthday in April, ages away i know, but im wanting some idea's on what to do, like the cake and things. I know DS will be far too young to remember it, but it's still his first birthday and i want to celebrate it well  Does anyone have any idea's on what type of cake i could do ? Im wanting to get some practice in making it so i can see if itl work or not, but i cant seem to find any good cake sites that give me idea's about a childs first birthday, also what did you get your DS on his first birthday ?
Since Christmas he seems to be loaded with toys lol, so im not really too sure on what to get him other then clothes, im wanting to also get him something special from me and DP..any thoughts or suggestions ? TIA ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| for DS 1st birthday - we are doing a cake for his cake smash photo shoot (actually on his birthday weather permitting lol) and for his 'party' i am actually going to just do cupcakes - but get some soccer ball cupcake toppers from http://realmumrealloverealmess.blogspot.com/2011/01/facebook-300-likes-giveaway.html#comments - Baked to Differ (and keep a couple). but Rs will have a candle to 'blow out'. |

No real suggestions on the BDay food as I'm having the same issue.
But as for the present I'm getting my DS a greenstone carving as his 'special' thing. I'm also going to plant his placenta  but not sure he'll care about that 
At his party I'm going to have all the kids do a painted handprint on a large roll of paper then get the mums/dads to write a message and keep it safely away for his 21st. |

I got a book from the library that had loads of cool cakes in it (I may now buy it since I know that the cake works!). I tried looking online but I found it too hard to choose. I made ABC blocks (4 of them) but instead of ABC, I put ALEX on them. It was a vanilla custard cake, with buttercream icing and then fondant over the top. It worked out pretty well, but I wouldn't recommend making blocks - it's the same as making 4 cakes! Anyway, my point was that the actual cake was quite nice and firm enough to stand being cut up into smaller pieces. Alex only had a little bit of the cake, but there were loads of adults at his party so they ate the cake!
For Alex we got him a walker (a fun giraffe shaped one) that also had blocks. Oh and a paddling pool since his birthday is in December and it was stinking hot! ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

Great ideas girls, i've just been thinking flat out about all this stuff this morning. For the prez we'll be getting http://www.mocka.co.nz/kids-table-and-chairs/wooden-table-and-chairs.html?SID=f1e1a6c244a380bef4565e7b64ab36f0 - these table and chairs and thinking of doing a late avo picnic dinner on our front lawn, but with yummy cooked foods for the adults, and some healthy easy stuff for the kids, just the cake as the real sugary treat hehe
Am going to hand make the invites, so it's worth keeping to put away for him later, get some helium blue and white baloons to tie in the trees surrounding the front lawn. Do you have a cake shop in your area that hires tins? We've one in Lower Hutt that is great! |

We just had DS's first birthday on Saturday
I made a '1' cake, I rented the tin from a cake shop and it cost $14 for a weeks hire. I used the 'Birthday Cake' thread here in the recipes section for the cake recipe which was AWESOME and made & dyed marshmallow fondant myself which is super easy. Take a look in the thread and you might get some good ideas, there are some super cake makers here! Seeing as DS's birthday was so close to Christmas (20th Jan) he had just gotten so many gifts already but we got him some more toys, he got loads of clothes and his first ride on trike (the no pedals type) We also got him a pewter race car with engraving on it to say 'Happy 1st Birthday Liam, Love Mum & Dad' type thing that he will always have. You could also get a money box and engrave on it, there are some very cool ones out there that we looked at. He also got loads of books

great ideas ladies! My DD will be 1yo in under a month and I'm only just getting round to organising things now and I have NO idea where to start! Probably guna be lazy and buy a cake cause I can't bake cakes to save myself. The cake will be mainly for the adults, but will do healthier little cupcakes for the little ones. Doing a zoo animal theme so will try and suss out if I can find some animal cupcake toppers somewhere....... -------------

nzlisajo there's a really cool website I found with loads of baking bits and pieces at really good prices, they have zoo animal moulds http://www.cakestuff.co.nz/zencart/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=3824 - Zoo Animal Moulds You can also use them for gum paste but you can buy packs of chocolate for moulds at Spotlight to make it simple

We're not doing a theme for my DS's 1st birthday - thought I would save the themes for when he can remember them! But we are having like a mini pool party! Can't wait!
Party cake - one of DS's little friends can't have egg so have found an egg free chocolate cake that will be perfect and then am going to decorate it like a Buzzy Bee!! Presents, think we are just going to go for a ride on trike and maybe something else but haven't got that far in our thinking yet!! Good luck with the planning! We're doing an enchanted garden theme, fairies, butterflies, bugs etc and having a lunchtime BBQ with party food as well.
We're also dairy, grain and mostly sugar free so the main cake will be a pavlova with whipped coconut cream and blueberries with dark chocolate shaved on top and then I'm loading up a cupcake tower with cupcakes for everyone else. Think I'm just going to do pink icing with the little silver balls to decorate them and do silver wrappers too - simple but effective
When my boys turned 1, their main presents were a leap frog activity table (which has lasted brilliantly through all 3 kids) for DS1 and DS2 got a little people farm set which has also lasted well. ------------- Mum to two boys and http://lilypie.com">

Present wise, so far we've only got Isla a set of Beatrix Potter books (she LOVES books) and I think we will get her a ride on trike, table and chair set, one of those wee fold out couch things and I was thinking of getting her a wee keepsake bracelet. They are called luvlets and are like pandora for kids. Probably a bit excessive but I think they are a cool idea, then we can add a bead at each birthday or special occassion.

We are doing a pool party for Lily's Bday at the local pool with just family.
Theme is under the sea so our cake is shaped like a fish! (if you go to the food/recipes section and look in the cakes bit on page 12 I think it is, is our cake (green fish) that MIL is going to make but we're still experimenting with other cakes too) ours is a chocolate cake with butter icing. Figure one day of 'party food' isn't going to hurt! We also had the antenatal group's 1st birthday party on Monday and the host did cupcakes for all the babies. Also on our invites we've put presents optional because Lily got anything/everything at Xmas... But We've got her some shoes, and 2 age appropriate toys. My mum has got her some clothes, blocks and a bath boat.

For my dd (now 14) i did the duck cake out of the old womans weekly cake book. It was actually quite hard and was held together with so many toothpicks I had to make another cake to actually eat. We got her a really nice blanket box that she could store keepsakes in.
DS1 had a cattipilar cake and we had like a little critter theme....since he was such an outdoors boy. DS2 just had his bday a couple of weeks ago and I make him a noah's ark cake...pretty much because that was what I wanted to make and I figured this would be the only year he was too young to ask for a specific cake. :-) We had both the boys 'dedicated' on their first bday, but didn't buy them any thing special. You could put together a time capsule for his birthday. I did something really simple for the 1st b'day cake, just did a normal round cake and got cookie cutter and food colouring and cut out ducklings. They were wandering all around the cake. Molded up the beaks, eyes and legs. It looked great and was a doodle to do.
