I was checking my facebook today and was quite surprised at how many people abreviate their words as if they were texting. It's drives me nuts! I just don't get it. Sorry if I am a bit of a grammer & spelling Nazi

I was reading one post a friend wrote and thought I'd share just a few of the words from that sentance.

Tht = That
Famz = Family
M8 = Mate
Hw = How
Neva = Never
Gna = Going to
Ya = You
Sn = Seen
Algud = All good

Arrrrggg it hurts my eyes! lol. I don't mind the odd abreviation but trying to read an entire sentance of this madness hurts my head! Do you do it? and if you do does it actually making typing faster? It seems like it would take up a lot of time trying to think of all these abreviations lol

ARGHHH! I don't mind the odd LOL or LMAO but deliberately misspelling words and writing in "txt speak" on facebook or in emails really grinds my gears! I thought maybe I was just getting old, but I have friends who are older than me - one is a school teacher - who do this all the time. Drives me up the wall.

I hate it. I've never understood why people write, 'wat' for 'what' it doesn't sound like that at all.

Exactly... my mum does it and I feel disgusting everytime I see it!  I think "eww mum!!!!" but then she wouldn't even realise it!!  I never spell 'come' that way because of it!

And I agree with your OP, so sick of seeing text speak everywhere I look!  I honestly think of that person as being dumb when I read their post/email.  There is no need for it.  Even advertising is getting in on it... like the speed adverts which I think only makes it dangerous when you're driving along trying to work out what the damn sign is trying to say, just makes it distracting.

If people are lazy they should just use predictive text...

Ba ha ha ha love this... I can't even stand seeing 'text' speak in a text, I had one from a younger cousin and it took me ages to work out what she meant! Everyone should use predictive text!!

I use predictive so that all words are spelt correctly, can't stand text speak. Some of my cousns do it on Facebook and I can't stand it. My MIL does it in texts and never uses punctuations so sometimes it takes me ages to understand what she is trying to say

I hate it too. A good friend of mine does it and even does it in emails. "Wat u doin?" really gets on my nerves.   And it takes me forever to work out what they're saying half the time too.

On another annoying note:

Why don't elevators just have 'Open' and 'Close' buttons instead of the arrows? It takes me ages to work out which way is which and I always (mostly, never usually on purpose but sometimes is) shut the door on someone while going "Oh... oh... sorry"

Yup, me too drives me bonkers. I've never understood short text and it drives me crazy especially when its used when its being typed from a keyboard. Or worse, text language at work in emails

I'm another "h8er" of the text speak when you have a full QWERTY keyboard at your disposal.

What makes me even madder is when words are misspelled to look 'cool' but have the same amount of letters.
eg: "kewl, wut tyme shud we meet yew?"

I'm a full grammar/punctuation texter, too. I'll sometimes shorten it a little when I know the recipient's phone can't handle a text longer than 160 characters. But in a way that doesn't make their brain melt (or make them think I was a complete moron) when trying to read it.
"Hi. How R U? What time R we goin to meet? I thought we could meet @ 3pm?"
Instead of "Hi. Howzit goin? Wut tyme we gon meet? I thort we cud meet at 3pm?"

I hate it too. I tend to use punctuation in my text and the only word I sometimes shorten is tomorrow..to tomoro (because predictive text lets me). I dont even do the C U L8r that everyone seems too. It takes me longer to do that then type it properly. GRRRRRRRRR

On the other hand I have no problems with ,are the called, acronyms?...you know, like LOL, BFP all those ones we use here. I can read those fine but I cnat read words that arent spelt (spelled?) correctly.

I HATE HATE HATE that too!

I dont mind the odd word or poor spelling and grammer either but when EVERY word is wrong..... it's like trying to read another language.

If it's obviously just a typo I don't think anyone minds. But text language is for texts! I use @, &, 2 (to), 4 (for), l8r, & 2moro in texts to fit it in, only to people who I know understand it (& they're words I've saved to predictive text). Definitely use fullstops etc. People who use text speak outside of texts sound thick in my head, if that makes sense. Acronyms I think are great, especially on a forum like this when discussing personal things, eg BD, AF.

I hate it too! My MIL & SIL use it ALL THE TIME. I just want to ring them up and say "what did your text say".
And like one of you said, when it uses the same amount of letters as the real word, whats the point!
And punctuation, especially fullstops, are essential to a text making any sense.
I use predictive and love it.

I used to use predictive but now have a full keyboard. Some of my mistakes are caused by hitting the wrong key and not bothering to correct it.

On a side note I have young people who are around me alot (SIL family) and I have actually heard them say W.T.F not what it stands for but the letters and the worst one is LOL as in pronouncing it lol in lollie... yes I laughed at them and asked them what the hell they were saying hahaha and told them how lame they were

HAHA!
I say "WTF" (*edited to add: 'double-you-tee-eff') around the kids.
And my grandfather signs his emails off with "LOL" thinking it means "lots of love". I haven't the heart to correct him

Haha, "WTF - Why The Face" Modern Family is so funny.
I say lol (like lollie) sometimes.
My mum uses LOL for Lots of Love, it always makes me lol

this also gets on my nerves but not when its used in obvious context. what i really hate is when some people use it in the entire message even on facebook and expect anyone to be able to read it. one of my cousins is soo bad for this.

this is one i just found that a friend wrote

"harrow lmao i can tawk on dat chat thng it wnt work unless sum1 chats ta me im board"

I mean come on really can you just not spell because most of that doesnt even shorten the word laugh out loud

I do seriously wonder about some young people, how they will cope once they get into the workplace! Are they going to be judged for their shocking spelling since they just spell things however they want??
