So just quietly DH has been offered a promotion which would mean moving from Palmerston North to Nelson in about March/April.
I've only ever been to the airport before so don't know anything really about the city. So am after any advice or knowledge or anything. The job would be in Richmond so advice on living and areas to avoid etc would be great too.
What do you love?
What do you hate?
Is there anything there for first time mums?
What are living costs like?
Do you pay for water?
Arghh, so much to think about. We have both lived in the Manawatu forever so this is a huge thing to take on right now.

wow that is an amazing opportunity to get a job in Nelson! I am Nelson born and bred but now in Auckland!
There is heaps to do there and it is a very family friendly city to live in! there are loads of music, library, playgroups to go to. Lots of great parks, playgrounds and beaches to take littlies too. If you have any questions just PM me i am more than happy to answer any questions!
p.s. Richmond is a great place to live, that is where my brother and kids live and would be where we would live should we move back! and there are not really any bad areas in Richmond!

If you want to have a gander at houses check out realestate.co.nz.....that's what we do if we think of a job somewhere! Plus fun to look at houses...
It has rentals and for sales so gives you a bit of an idea as to what prices will be like there....and what you get for your money!

Haha, sun, beaches, fruit... beats Palmy hands down as far as I can see
But, I guess you have family here, which would make it a harder decision

Wow congrats, Nelson is a fabulous place. I would start looking for houses in the Richmond/ Tasman area. You are looking at around $300 for a 3brm house, trade me does not show the best picture of the market- alot of houses are in the paper for rent. Yes you do have to pay for water, I cant tell you how much as we live on the family farm. The great thing about here is the weather (lol typical i know!), we get lots of sunshine, and when it rains it usually does it quickly and quite often overnight.
There are lots of things for a first time mum, some of the playcentres run SPACE courses, there are walks and music groups. Plunket can put you in touch with some ladies that have kids around the same age.
Richmond is becoming bigger than nelson in the sense that it has room to grow bigger where as nelson is confined to what is already there- in terms of shop space. The whole area is close to all sorts of goodies like the Malborough sounds, Abel Tasman, Lake Rotoiti, Murchison area.
Food costs are i assume the same as other big centres, there are a few local fruit/vege stalls that are way cheaper than the supermarkets, and you can do all your shopping in richmond. I hardly ever go into Nelson itself as it is a 20min drive, and everything is in Richmond anyway. Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions Oh and I personally would think that it was WAY better than PN- but thats just my opinion

Oh cool thanks ladies, all good info so far. Keep it coming.....
Pre-DS I worked in the rental property business so am fairly onto it with that stuff, but I did mean to ask about local newspapers and if they advertised for rent in there too. Do you know what day they predominately advertise Aethalia (for instance its Wed and Sat up here) and can you please tell me what the name of the newspaper is, so I can see if I can get a copy.
I'm glad you say they advertise more in the paper, as what I've seen online is pretty pittiful
Haha T-Rex, I know right. Most places probably beat Palmy

Lucky.....we would love to move to Nelson.
Last year we went there twice on holiday and are already itching to get back soon.
My work is 'thinking' about starting up down there towards the end of the year. I have my fingers crossed that they do and if so that I can get a transfer.
Ahhhh.....Nelson

if your in town and need to pee dont go to the public toilets in the centre of the carpark.
they make you pay to use them.
50c a go (or was 50c pre GST increase)

Just moved to Nelson 10 days ago (well, closer to Richmond, really!) and loving it so far. Haven't got to grips with what there is yet, but it's sure better than the Coast!

Mucky- thats only in Montgomery carpark- if you ahd walked across traflagar street you could have gone in buxtons for free! Its the only one you have to pay at and i dont know anyone that uses it for that reason!
The paper is the Nelson Mail (so original! not), and im pretty sure its wed and sat, most papers its the standard days. If you want I could scan the pages in for you each week? I know they wont have the listings online.
If you dont want to live in Richmond itself then Hope, Brightwater, Wakefield and Appleby are all within a 20minute drive- they are all 'country' towns/areas. I know its hard to find places that are decent and not too expensive, trade me is utter rubbish, lots of the ones on there have been on there for ages.

Haha thanks for the toilet tip
I'm not too fussed on where we live, but wouldn't want to be more than a 20min drive away.
Thanks for all the help Aethalia, I will PM you.
