DS turned one last week.
He has always been a tummy sleeper, and has been in a safety sleep for the last couple of months since he has been able to sit himself up. All was good til 3 nights ago, when he started twisting onto his back inside the safety sleep and then screaming cos he cant sleep on his back. Not sure if he can physially turn himself back onto his tummy while inside the saftey sleep or not- he doesnt do it, he just screams. So we go turn him over and he settles, then soon enough hes back screaming on his back. It has been really hot the last 3 nights too, so it may have something to do with that. Hes only wearing a short sleeve body suit- could try nothing I guess. Have tried having fan on, and have tried placing rolled up towels along each side of his body but he can still roll over. I tired putting him down without the safety sleep for his nap this morning, he lay there, then 5 mins later I could hear him talking/playing. Would appreciate any ideas please! We are exhauseted! |

can you loosen the safety sleep if you dont want to get rid of it completely. I assume he can roll over by himself when he isnt in the safety sleep? or maybe you can undo it after he goes to sleep. ------------- http://www.myfitnesspal.com/weight-loss-ticker">

| Yeah he can roll fine. Im happy to get rid of it, whatever works, but he was just playing when I tried to put him down without it. WIll try to undo it once he asleep, thanks. Hope the velcro noise doesnt wake him tho! |

Its so hard isn't it! We have gotten rid of the safe t sleep recently, as my DS (who is 11 months) could just rip it open anyway 
It took me a few weeks to risk leaving it off at night and he still gets a bit disorientated, but is getting there. My DS also plays when he goes to bed, but I just consider that winding down and leave him to it. Eventually (after 10 min or so) he will lie down and go to sleep. In saying all that we are battling bedtime at the moment, with screaming and crying so I am certainly no expert! |

I would try getting rid of the safe t sleep too, so he can roll around as he needs to in the cot (and will probably be cooler without it too).
5 minutes of talking/playing doesn't seem like much, if it was 5 minutes of screaming I'd think otherwise. Could you try just leaving him to it and see if he goes off to sleep eventually? My nearly 2 year old ds chats to himself in his room often for about half an hour, just quietly winding down before he lies down to go to sleep. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

No 5 mins doesn't sound very long to be playing, DS spends quite a while settling down to sleep, consider it part of their nap/quiet time. Same as AuntySarah, might be half an hour of quiet play before DS settles to sleep. It is pretty cute when I check him later and he is in some wacky position lol.
We recently went cold turkey on the safety sleep which meant he took longer to settle since he can get up and play (tho he had started getting it off anyway and getting up) but I had tried opening it up when he was asleep but the velcro is LOUD, esp when you try to be quiet..... He doesn't seem to miss it tho...I was pretty nervous as I had tried when he first started rolling in his sleep but he was AWFUL! -------------

Kellz if you are going to remove the safe-t-sleep while he's sleeping, you could always do it up the opposite way so it's not velcro'd and pin it. DS would always fully wake up when he worked out how to undo it, the noise is loud!

It does sound like it's time to get rid of the safety sleep. It usually only takes them a few days to adjust and since you're having to get up at the moment anyway it shouldn't be much worse. My 11mo too sits and plays before sleep but goes off when he's ready with only a little cry/wail. If i go in to look at him he's all over the place with his books on/under him. Ok maybe we just have to bite the bullet and get rid of it. Im happy for him to take a bit to get to sleep if hes happy, but not if hes getting himself in a state cos hes over tired. We are just used to him going straight to sleep when we put him in bed!

I still use the safe t sleep for DD and she rolls all over the show with it - I put her to bed on her back and she always ends up on her tummy at some stage. I pin hers and dont have it on overly tight just enough to know it is there. I also wrap it the other way so the velcro doesnt need to be undone :)
i will try to get rid of it over the next few days but at the moment while we are still having bed time problems I will leave it. Hope it all works out for you Kellz and he starts sleeping okay soon! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Well DS slept through last night.
DH did the safety sleep up a bit loser last night, and when I checked DS before I went to bed he was asleep on his back, and he was on his back this morning when DH got him up too. So we think the problem must have been the heat. It was much cooler last night, but had been 25degrees overnight the last few nights. Thanks for the tips everyone

| We have now got rid of the safety sleep and are using his sleeping bag again which seems to be working. He moves around everywhere and has had quite a few nights of lots of waking cos hes rolled on his back or is right in a corner,...but seems to have settled down again now. |
