Im part of a new parent group happening in Christchurch -
Kiwi Mums (used to be known as M.O.P.S) is happening the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 9.30-11.30 at the St Albans Baptist church. This is a group for all mums to come and relax, meet mums and learn crafts. Children are cared for in a creche which mums have some time out. Let me know if you want more info First day of the new group of Feb 22nd. What is a MOPS group? MOPS stands for Mothers of Preschoolers, a time-out programme for mothers with children under school age (0-5) years. A MOPS group provides a caring, accepting atmosphere for all mothers and young children, where mums have the opportunity to share in a time of instruction, discussion and craft. Teaching is based on Biblical principles. MOPS strives to fulfil the mother's need for friendship, the need for creativity and the need for spiritual growth. It is fun, fulfilling and reaches out to both the believer and the non-believer. While mum attends MOPS, the children are cared for in MOPPETS, a programme that offers a loving, learning environment for children. What is so unique about a MOPS group? MOPS is not 'just another playgroup.' It is a time to encourage, develop and equip mothers of preschoolers - as women, wives, and mothers. It is a time-out programme designed specifically to help meet the unique needs of mothers of young children. Is a MOPS group a Bible study? No, and for a specific reason. Often a format that is strictly Bible study is not appealing to those brought up outside of church. Therefore, a teaching format of topical interest is given from the Biblical perspective. This provides practical Christianity, which allows all women to feel comfortable from their first visit to a MOPS group. How often does a MOPS group meet? MOPS groups usually meet for two hours once a fortnight, say on the first and third (Wednesday) of the month with a Night MOPS or something different on the fifth (Wednesday) of the month. This allows time for proper preparation by the leaders, avoids burnout, and yet meets the needs of the women attending. The MOPS calendar follows the school year and groups do not usually meet during school holiday periods. The MOPS group programme is adaptable to the individual needs of different communities. What do the children do? MOPPETS is the children's counterpart programme, which is made possible through the supporting church, while MOPS is taking place. Children under school age (0 - 5) years are cared for in a loving, warm atmosphere. The children grow spiritually, socially, and creatively during this time through a carefully planned programme. The MOPPETS programme is as important to the children as MOPS is to the mothers. My child doesn't like to be separated from me. What happens if he/she doesn't settle? MOPPETS encourages children's independence and has a wonderful array of new toys and resources for them to experience. MOPPETS workers are experienced in settling children. You can discuss your child's needs with the MOPPETS leader and work out a plan which suits your needs. How much does it cost to attend a MOPS group? MOPS groups usually ask for a small donation to help cover operating costs. This usually ranges from $3 - 5 per session. MOPS groups usually have a sponsorship fund available to cover those mums for whom this is unaffordable. Do I have to call before I attend MOPS? No, although as many groups meet fortnightly you may want to check which week they meet, or check that there aren't any special events scheduled with a different venue. Yes they are more than happy for babies under 6mths to stay with mothers if needed. The staff that look after the childrenare more than happy to have babies and bring them back to their mum when they need a feed or cuddle so you have 2 choices :)
