(copied from the due dec thread - cause would love more ideas and can't be naffed retyping or refomulating my thoughts)
Ok - I need some ideas. Currently I am 25 kgs overweight and not loosing any weight by BFing (I wasn't expecting too as I didnt' loose any last time) My problem is that I am starving all of the time (yes I know that that is to be expected) but I don't know what to eat. I fear that at the rate I amgoing I am gaining weight (not many of my clothes fit - including most of my maternity clothes) For lunch today I had 3 toast slice of multigrain bread with salmon, a yoghurt and an orange. I don't have any issues with the nutrtional levels of what I ate for lunch today but ideally I don't want to eat this much bread so I need some ideas of what to eat. (also I think I could be on the verge of hungry again and I only just finished lunch...) What is everyone else eating during the day????? I'd be ineterested to hear lots of gluten free options
(wondering if some of my hunger is actually mental boredom? must remember to drink more water during the day)

I found drinking water when I bf'd really helped because I was actually thirsty - not hungry!
Otherwise I'd eat 2 toasted sammies (normally ham, cheese, pineapple), a slice of something sweet or...
2 carrots, 2 potatoes, 1 courgette steamed and there would be heaps but would put it in a sandwich (mashed) lol.

I eat gluten free but I'm not trying to lose weight so take and pick your options:
GF toast with butter and peanut butter
Yoghurt and chopped fruit
Egg on toast
Salad with mayonnaise, grated cheese, or boiled egg
Frittata (omelette with veges in it)
Baked potato
Rice pudding - can be made with coconut milk/cream instead of cow's milk

Maybe try more protein to make you fuller longer?
* Chicken salad or chicken roll/wrap
* An omlette
* Smoothie with some protein powder in it.
I've got the early pregnancy hunger going on and know what you mean about feeling starving not long after eating.

weehee i was just like you, starving all the time and then i found the wonder food - chia seeds. Man these things rock! They are these boring little seeds that i put on my cereal or put in glass of water and drink and they fill me up. When i first started using them i would often forget to have morning tea or even lunch a few times! Before that i used to make myself wait to eat cos i was just so darn hungry all the time. Now i never need morn or afternoon tea. I get mine from the bulk bins at Pak'n'save. Where are you?

When I first started BF and getting up at night I was having something to eat at every feed, sometimes it was only complan, a muesli bar or some fruit dried or fresh after losing 10kgs immediately after the birth my weight has now stabilized I've started walking so its slowly coming off.
I'm over weight too and am not planning to diet until DD is weaned need lots of protein and healthy foods to feed her.

BF women should be having 2200 cals per day... losing wieght a MINIMUM of 1800 to sustsain supply etc...
I follow a general rule of carb, protein, fruit for brekky; carb, protein, friut or veg for lunch; carb, protein and veg for dinner with smoothies or nuts for snacks.
I drink 3 ltr of water a day as bf dehyrdrates me.
so a daily menu moght look like:
B= porridge with low fat milk, piece of toast with baked beans or eggs on toast.
MT: banana snoothie with couple of scoops of complan, low fat milk and yoghurt
L= 2 x ham, cheese n tomato toasties or cuppa soup with bread or leftovers from dinner or home made veg soup with bread or sandwiches (like egg or tuna)
AT= crackers n cheese or home baking or peanut butter sandwich or handful of raw nuts
D= stir frys or mince pasta dishes or bbq, salad and cous cous or roast/meat veg
I also might have a small ice cream or baking for pudding but will normally have some snack every night otherwise I am rummaging around the kitchen at 3am STARVING. I also tend to drink a whole pump bottle through the night as like lil_nic I am actually really thirsty not so much hungry!
I find this diet allows me to maintain weight and all I need to do is exercise regularily and i will loose weight. So I aim to do 20 mins of yoga at least every day (if you have sky there is yoga tv on the living channel at 6.30am which I mysky and do when the boys are in bed at lunch time or at night) and when my new zumba dvds arrive i want to do that 3-4 times a week minimum on top of the yoga (which I am really doing as my back is ruined from the baby making and feeding) and I feel about 3 inches taller after wards.)

Oh I also find the days I have eggs on toast or porridge I dont need the morning tea...
I really like the idea of frittata for lunch.. might start doing that and lil_nic the mashed veg sandwiches actually sound yum (toasted with a little cheese would be YUMMO too)

i was overweight (still am) but lost weight bfing and i ate ALL THE TIME...you need at the moment to just go with what your body needs ..
i waited to recover a bit more then about 5 months started WW which gives you extra bfing points and lost 15kg on that..
I don't think that much bread is bad you need extra atm!:)

I would focus on low GI carbohydrates (whole grain breads, basmati rice, pasta, kumara, fruit etc), and ensuring that you are eating protein with each meal, as both types of food will make you feel fuller for longer. Eggs, nuts and fruit are all good things when you are trying to lose weight.
What you should avoid are high calorie foods that don't fill you up - high GI carbs (white or wholemeal breads, short grain or jasmine rice, potatoes etc) foods containing a lot of sugar (such as baked goods, pastry, soft drinks, fruit juices etc) and foods containing saturated fats (butter, cheeses, cream, high fat meats etc).
For what it's worth, I have discovered all of this since being diagnosed with GD at 19 weeks. What I have suggested above is basically a diabetic diet, which I have been following for 3 months now. At 31 weeks, my weight is 1.5kg below my pre-pregnancy weight, and it has been healthy weight loss (i.e., all my medical specialists are happy with mine and bubs health).
