has anyone got a trick to get AF back without having to wean bubs off breastmilk? DD id 6 months now, and i would like AF back by the time she is a year, as i need at least 2 normal cycles to have a frozen imbryo tranfser done (we are IVFers). i really dont want a big gap between kiddies, but i dont really want to force DD to wean if she is not ready?
Any advice???

I would wait a few more months- once shes having more solids u will probably find it comes back, without having to wean her at all- just the increase in solids will mean shes feedinga bit less of you. Most people I know - like the Jan 2010 mums, got it back by about 7 months.

Give it time, most people will have it back within a year. I was one of the last of the Dec09 mums and I got it back at 11 months.

Otherwise, if you do want to encourage it, you could try night weaning her when she is a bit older, so that you have a long period without nursing each night? It's actually the frequent suckling, rather than the milk production that inhibits ovulation

Good luck

I just got mine back, and DD is 8 1/2 months old, it has definatly co-incided with her eating more solids, we are doing BLW and just in the past few weeks she has really started eating food.

you can also try Vitex, it helps balance out your hormones and can help to bring af back

I'm still BFing but I was on the minipill which i think mucked things up a bit. However when I went off it I got the one period when K was about 7 months and then got UTD again :D. She was nightweaned at about 3 1/2 mths. That may have helped.

I don't get AF until i have fully weaned.
But usually the first port of call is night weaning. That also has the added benefit of getting a full nights sleep!

We're feeding day and night, pretty regularly still and still no AF here either but I am on depo currently, went on the mini pill (still no AF) and we've talked about going on the normal pill (which you can do after 6 months apparently) and doc said I will most likely get an AF. But you're wanting to TTC so not sure if it would work unless you took it for a couple of cycles to get AF and then stopped... Not sure sorry!

No Nic, the period you get on the normal pill is nothing to do with ovulation, so that wouldn't help. You'd just get the periods without the chance to get pg - no thanks

It's ovulation that is usually supressed by BF.

Yeah, I'd wondered that after I posted, because you don't OV with it... But once you stopped, AF may continue maybe??

Some pills dont supress ov rather affect your progesterone to force a period... just as an fyi

If it were me I would try vitex and b6

But would wait until solids are established...

Oh and good luck!!!

Im trying for number 3 now, I havent weaned , but have started my girl on solids and since moving her into her own room she is waking only once a night if that for a drink
I did lots of research cause I dont want to wean her til she does it herself, and it appears that a sudden change if B/F habits can cause ovulation, but possibly not a period.
I definately ovulated this month , about a week after my girl stopped feeding around the clock so that bit worked for me, whether or not I get pregnant ( BD'd as soon as I realised I was ovulating and took executive B ) or get AF is still to be seen. Im a bit crampy at the moment so will just have to wait and see what that means
I will try and update if AF arrives (or I get a positive!)

Good luck Raspberry jam! Just had to say it's cool how your tickers say your DD2 is 5months, 4weeks and 2days old, and it's 5months, 4weeks and 2days till your DD1s next birthday

hehe not sure why I noticed that, it just caught my eye

ETA and seeing I'm here I may as well answer the question... I didn't ovulate till after my DD weaned at 13months. I got AF back at 8months but had it every 8-10days () till she weaned. Just looked at my chart, and she had her last BF on March 16th last year, and my 1st ovulation was April 25th.

Hope you take after the people who do ovulate while BFing!

My period returned once the quantity of BF-esp night feeds- dropped. I got UTD about cycle 3 and we weren't trying (but also weren't preventing).  A close gap is hard work but no doubt will be worth it...some day lol

I think I am probably in the minority but my AF came back REALLY early, DS was only 4 months old and trust me...we were feeding A LOT, including loads of overnight feeds. Mind you, we were using nipple shields so wonder if that had an effect, maybe less nipple stimulation or something?

Anyway, my point is that everyone is so different and the actual time spent BF can make not a blind bit of difference.

I am certainly interested in this increase ferility thing while BF, off to check out link....this is probably a stupid question, I am def ovulating every month and my cycles are regular as clockwork so does BF have any impact now or none whatsoever??

There\s such a huge variation. I never missed a period. Stopped bleeding from the birth at about 2 weeks. 2 weeks later my periods were back like clockwork. i have definatly ovulated every month since. Luca is fully breastfed and starting solids now. he's finally down to 1 feed at night. We are doing a FET in the next 2 months. I've heard of people dropping down to just a couple of breastfeeds per day and then picking them back up after the transfer. Not too sure how well this works though.
