When you gave birth (at TGA hospital) did you get your own room AFTER the baby was born? or were you just shoved in with other people?
I ask because my mum keeps telling me that when I have bubs im just gonna be put in a room with other people who have just had their babies, and that makes no sense to me lol -------------

I haven't had a baby there, but a friend did a few years ago and she was in a room with up to 3 other people...just on a maternity ward. They would have individual rooms too, just don't know what the criteria would be to get one. I have had a single room both times, first because I had a caeser and 2nd because my baby was in SCBU and I think they would have been a bit mean to put me in a room with another mum and a healthy baby.
I have been told that they do try to put 1st time mums in single rooms, but I know lots of mums in my coffee group who had straightforward labours were in rooms with others. It'll depend on how busy the hospital is because they will always put ceasers in single rooms b4 others. Also I think it helps if your MW speaks up for you. This makes me feel a bit better, especially now they only do 2 to a room! I can handle one other person but my mum is like "and your put into a room with like 4 other women who have just had babies" im like "eff off mum, not happening" lol. Id rather walk outta there as soon as I pushed bubs out then sleep in a room with 4 other screaming children lol. Also, are partners allowed to stay with you overnight or is that not allowed? -------------

I had both of my babies there. I didn't get a single room either time. My first was a pretty bad birth and i was EXHAUSTED and was put in with another mum. Her baby cried quite a bit. Luckily she was only in there for the first night. After that i was on my own. With my second i had a room all to myself even though there was another bed in there. That was a normal birth.
My first was born in the scummy old maternity unit but my second was born in the new maternity ward which is a lot nicer. It depends how busy they are i guess, whether or not you end up in with other mums. It should only be one other mum if you do. Edited to add, i don't think they want partner's staying. There isn't really anywhere for them anyway. You could always ask your MW just to check whether it would be possible or not. -------------

With my first daughter, I was in a room with 4 other people for the first night, then they all went home the next day so it was just me.
With the twins I was in a room with 1 other lady but no kids as we both had babies in SCBU. but that was in the old side so im not sure what happens now ------------- My beautiful big girl Sienna 15.04.06 Double the trouble double the fun Noah & Lola 10/11/07 |

I'm having a c-section on the 19th so guessing (depending on room) that I'll get my own room. Those of you who have had babies up there do they supply some nappies and maternity pads??
Hope you don't mind me asking a question StephiG, this is the 1st time and last time I'll be having a baby in Tauranga hospital. -------------

Yeah mum told me partners arent allowed to stay, I just know in a LOT of other hospitals partners are allowed to stay for the first night or so. My friends boyfriend stayed with her the whole time she was in hospital. He just slept on the floor on this little mattress thing. -------------

I gave birth in November (crash c-section, baby in SCBU) and had my own room. They give women who have had a c-section single rooms and most others will go into a 2-bedder although you may be the only one in the room. -------------

They won't let you have a partner stay, you can definately try and ask, but I'm pretty sure they won't let you. They are also really strict on the visiting times. And they supply all the maternity pads and nappies and stuff you need, my MW made me take everything they had given me because she said that once its in your room they can't use it for anyone else and have to throw it out, a bit of a waste if you ask me. ------------- http://www.alterna-tickers.com">

I had one baby in the old maternity annex. I was alone in a 4 bed room. There were only a handful of new mums there at the time though and I'd had an emergency c/s.
Second baby in the new maternity ward was a planned c/s. I had my own room close to the nurses station. The hospital provided all the pads, nappies and disposable flannels I needed. I found they weren't too strict about visiting hours so long as the visitors came during the day. That may have been because I had a single room? They don't restrict partner's visits, but we never asked about him staying the night as we had another child at home he had to care for. ------------- |

I had a room to myself for 1 night! I had an emergency c/s with my 1st in the old maternity annex and i hated it! The first night was ok but the next morning another lady came into share and OMG she drove me crazy! I put my foot down and got my midwife to discharge me early. My next birth a yr later i was in a room with 3 other ladies but i was only in overnight thankfully. My next 2 were born at home and my last (born Aug 10) i had him at 11am and was home at 2.30pm. ------------- DD 9 ~ DD 8 ~ DS 7 ~ DS 5 ~ DS 2 ~ DS 14mths ~ DD 3mths |
