Hey fellow parents,

I was wondering if my dd is going through another growth spurt. She is 14 weeks old today, and I'm pretty sure she went through the 3 month one a couple of weeks ago (not really feeding much more during the day but woke up during the night for extra feeds - unusual these days). But for the past couple of days she has been very hard to settle, wont sleep long when she does, and wants to eat every couple of hours. She usually goes 3-4 hours between feeds and is good in that she wont feed if she isnt hungry, she will turn away from my breast, but at the moment it seems that is all she wants. I can also usually tell when she is comfort sucking rather than feeding, and this mainly is feeding, till she gets too tired to suck very hard. I'm really lucky that my usual low milk supply is currently boosted and keeping up with her demands, but I am concerned about the lack of sleep and the methods I am having to use to get her to sleep (albeit very briefly). I wasnt expecting another growth spurt so soon. I am prepared to ride it out for another day or two before getting concerned, but would appreciate some advice or comments (& support!) from those who have gone through this before me. Or suggestions of what else might be going on. I'm sure her previous growth spurts werent quite like this! Or maybe I've just forgotten already! Do you think I'll be able to get her sleeping again routinely after this? And going to sleep quickly and quietly? She is fighting sleep so much at the moment its not funny!
Thanks.

It could also be that she is very hot and thirsty, and so is needing to nurse more often, but may only be taking the thirst quenching foremilk some of the time.

I'm not sure how her room is set up but maybe try a fan (not pointed at her) to help move the air and cool it down.

Its just so super hot atm that anyway to keep these babies of ours cool is a good thing. Mine is totally naked atm cept for nappies.

It could also be a growth spurt, like you say and with the heat its just making her really hungry and thirsty.

Hi, I had thought about the heat, but its been hot and humid for a while, and its only the past day or two that she has been extra hungry (full on eating too! she is getting more than foremilk!) and not sleeping. We have a fan in her room and atm she wears just nappies and gets swaddled when asleep (or trying to sleep!) It would be nice to just let her lie there in her nappy, but we have gone back to swaddling as it settles her better for a longer sleep. I'd also love her to take a bottle with some cooled, boiled water to help with the thirst, but she is refusing that too!
Thanks for the suggestions!

She could quite possibly be going through a mini growth spurt. Although there are common times for them eg 6 weeks, 12 weeks etc, my DS often had little mini ones in between just to keep me on my toes. I would say just go with it, and feed her as much as she wants. She is still only little and may just need extra at the moment. As Kalimirella said, it could be the heat too.

Easier said than done I know, but try to nap/rest during the day, keep your fluids and food intake up, and it will pass!

Apparently when it's hot your breast milk can be a bit more watery (to hydrate baby better). That's why we're told that BF babies don't usually need to be fed extra water. So maybe it's just taking some extra feeds for her to really feel full. It could also be a growth spurt... hopefully it doesn't last long and she settles soon!!! If your supply has been boosted, then you're keeping up with her demands and probably the only thing you can do is continue to feed her when she's hungry. Just make sure you're getting plenty of rest :)

Lily seemed to have a growth spurt every couple of weeks until she was about 5-6mo. It was reflected in her plunket chart too.

It could be the heat, just let her nurse when she wants and I am certain everything will turn back to normal soon/eventually.

The feeding might be linked to her sleeping. My girls day sleeping changed dramatically about the same age (for the worse unfortunately) and as a result they began to feed 2 - 2.5 hourly.

I also went back to swaddling (and a large number of other methods to try to get them to settle and stay asleep) and on the days they slept well their feeding was back to 3-4 hourly.
