Dh mentioned the other day that he'd like to paint a picture one day and I thought this would be a great present idea but have no idea where to start.
I was thinking of getting a canvas frame, range of brushes and some acrylic paints. Does that sound about right? Once he puts his mind to something he is very focused so want to make sure that what I get him is enough to get him started.
He is no artist so I am thinking it will be somewhat 'abstract' Thanks

I think that would be a lovely pressie! A canvas would be nice, because you don't have to frame it afterwards, and acrylics would definitely be the easiest to use. You can get some nice sets of acrylics from art shops, too.

cool idea if he really is no artist i would include a few cheapie small canvas to practice blending etc in
my DH has done a few paintings quite simple things can look quite cool - one of the most simple is blending from light to dark on a canvas eg red mixed with black graduating up to red then mixing in some yellow and finally just yellow at the top and then painting a design over the top.
Also you can take a photo of something and using photoshop make it into a negative and just paint the outline on a canvas - looks quite cool. There is sure to be some sites to show how to make simple things too.

If you wanted to add to it and thought he would be interested, you could buy a book with some basics of art (composition, techniques, etc). That's not exactly essential, though, it doesn't take a manual to do a painting , but could make a nice extra.

Thanks everyone. I was just at the warehouse and they had some good options but will also go to an art shop to see what they have. Might even have to give it a go myself (after he has done his of course!)

Are you in Auckland? Geoffs Emporium in Dominion Rd has canvases at FANTASTIC prices, like 1/2 of the warehouse price.

I don't recommend the acrylic paints from the warehouse... they're awful to paint with IMO. Paper plus often has 50% off there canvases and they are thicker than the warehouse ones and often cheaper. I reckon for a reasonable priced acrylic paint the Reeves ones are pretty good ... and I agree awesome pressie idea!!

When my DD was just under 2 we did a hand & foot painting on canvas for DH's Xmas present. I've just done another one with DS for this Xmas. The kids loved it
