Subject: What are you superstitious about?
Date Posted: 17 December 2010 at 9:54am
I just realised how crazy I was when I got in the car this morning and turned the radio down because it was too loud. I looked at it to see what level I had turned it down to and it was 13 so I quickly changed it to 12! In my crazy mind I was thinking that having my volume at 13 would cause an accident. What a moron!
What are you superstitious about?

I wouldnt think I was a superstitious person BUT....I always throw salt over my left shoulder, wont walk under a ladder, open and umbrella inside AND you should hear me try to work out a wish.....I dont even like wishing for happiness incase I end up happy and someone else suffers etc. I am terrified of breaking a mirror...soooooo I guess not so unsuperstitious after all

I think it is bad luck to be supersticious
I spent the first two thirds of my life avoiding ladders, doing the salt thing etc and then i thought about it and realised i had had more than my share of bad luck in my life, so i stopped doing these things, and nothing has got worse. i even put umbrellas up indoors

Hehe, Susie.
I don't think I'm supersitious about anything. I can't think of anything, anyway.

i dont walk under a ladder. i stand under it and stabalise it.
my neighbours black cat comes inside and gets comfy on our couch -so not worried about black cats.
birds often fly into our house.
i have broken 4 mirrors in my life - they cancel each other out
I wont open an umbrealla in the house. only cos it knocks the mirror off the wall

If I say something is going well, and dont want to 'jinx' it, i always knock on wood..
but otherwise I'm not superstitious.. just slightly OCD (my stereo volume always has to be in increments of 5 )

more of an OCD than superstition - volume on anything that has a number association has to end in 0, 2, 5, 8 (10, 12, 15, 18, 20 etc)
dont put umbrella's up indoors (not only that, but i dont really see the point considering there is a roof lol)
i do the touch wood thing when i think ive jinxed something
when i 'make a wish' im really meticulous about it (incase i get an a$$hole genie lol)
and 'dont count your chickens before they hatch'. i hate getting ahead of myself, but i always do lol.
ladders, mirors, birds in the house, black cats dont phase me (used to have a black cat lol. and birds for that matter)

I always doing silly little things.....just incase
Always knock on wood if I say something is going well.
Touch white when I see a ambulance with its lights on
Always open packets the right way up, ie if you open a bag of chippies with the label upsidedown its bad luck
(not sure where that came from tho)
Lift my feet up when driving over railway tracks (except when Im driving because that too hard)
If im doing some pricing for client quotes and the total has three 6's in it I adjust it slightly so it doesnt
Im sure there is heaps more I do subconsciously, just cant think of them now

I'd never even heard about the touching white / ambulances thing! Although I do hate seeing them go past. I feel a bit better about it now my cousin works in one, he says that most of the time they're heading out to situations that are scary and need to be dealt with (old people with chest pains, babies with bronchitis etc) but that work out well - I was imagining car crashes every time I saw one

I hate things with three 6's!!!
I will touch wood etc, but only out of habit lol
Im a little OCD about things being...even and in place, like when I park my car the tyres have to straight when i hang a towel it has to be even etc. If Im putting something like hashbrowns in the oven there has to be an even number lol
I wont walk under a ladder lol

I hate it that I look at the clock and it says 911 or 111 I always think its trying to tell me something but then I manage to look at the clock whenever its 911 or 111!
I do the touch wood thing and I tend to not say anything about baby sleeping well or not being sick for ages because it always seems to jinx it!

This is an interesting thread!
I never allow new shoes on the kitchen table, eg when DH brings home shopping and puts a box of new shoes on the table I go nuts!!!
I always throw spilt salt over my shoulder.
Never walk under ladders.
I always touch wood!
New toilet rolls have to roll out from the wall as opposed to down against the wall (thats probably more OCD though). If I am at someones house and their toilet rol is around the wrong way I change it

What is this throwing salt over the shoulder thing?
I'm not superstitious at all.
Have a few OCD things tho, like saying "no trains" whenever I go over train tracks not sure where that originated from!

Nothing really, but re the volume control, always has to be 5 space intervals, or a even number so 5, 10, 15, 20... or 10, 20, 30... Lol

Oh yeah, 11.11 on a clock! That one drives me nuts actually!
I used to be superstitious about the ladder one, but it always seemed every time I walked around the ladder I'd slip over or trip so I gave up that one and no accidents.

the salt thing is a pinch of salt over the shoulder for good luck.
rachel ray does it all the time, and always says "salt over the shoulder for luck"

I thought i was totally mental but it seems a lot of us share the number quirk - mine have to be an even number! In the same area, but not superstition related prices that make no sense annoy me to no end - things that are $12.23 or something, whats wrong with $12.20 or $12.30?
The only real thing i've been spooked by is shortly after my dad dying a fantail (which arent common at all here, its actually the only one i've seen since i lived here) flying into his room and hanging out for half an hour or so. It sat on the bed above his side, the wardrobe door and the bedside table on his side.
I thought the superstition was a fantail in the house brings death and was quite worried about who was next but after some investigation found that they are also believed to carry spirits who want to say goodbye.
I know that sounds mad, but it was nice for me at the time to think he'd found away to let us know hes ok, even though he'd laugh at me for thinking it.

Oh, we always get fantails after someone dies, plus doors randomly locking/unlocking, gates opening/closing...

I have the same thing with the number 13... like if it's the volume I change it (but 12 and 14 are good luck), I can't look at the exercycle timer thing during the 13th minute (if I do I have to watch until it turns to 14)... I use to be far worse when I worked full time on the computer and I saw the wee clock in the corner had a 13 I had to watch until it changed - drove me a little crazy. If I stop the microwave early and it's on 13 I will turn it on again for another second etc etc...

Knock on wood is about it for us.
I figured shoe shops with there tables of shoes must be responsible for the national road toll. Hence the not worried about new shoes on tables any more.
I don't walk under ladders incase something falls on me. Usually there is someone up there with paint or a hammer. Just common sense on that one.

I do the toilet roll thing...but only because my nana (who is blind) once mentioned that when the end is against the wall, she can't feel where it starts and ends, whereas if it's hanging down away from the wall, she can
I do the "touch wood" thing and that's really it.

Haha this is gold!
I always knock on wood if I say something is going well.
I also do the touch white when I see a ambulance thing, regardless of if its lights are going. It becomes hard if your in the car with someone else and don't want to seem like an idiot, so I just touch my teeth LOL.
I see the 11.11 thing everywhere too - I read that it is meant to be good luck and that the angels are watching you!
OMG the toilet roll thing, I do it too - change it everywhere! Haha. But I have it so it comes down against the wall - what way do you girls do it? My Mum always tells me off because I'm forever changing hers! Haha. Once I had a hard time at this toilet because I went to change it and it wouldn't change, but I had it in my head that since I had started to change it over I just had to finish it - I nearly broke the bloody holder trying to do it, was in the loo for about 5 minutes hahahahaha

i have it against the wall too. it bugs me when its roll side out as if it gets bumped as we have to do some kind of foreign bum shuffle dance to get out of the toilet door the whole roll unrolls itself onto the floor otherwise

Toilet paper NEVER against the wall & I will always change it...ha ha.
A friend worked as a maid & they were told the correct way to do the toilet paper was away from the wall & you fold under the 2 ends to make a point (V) & that is the mark of class & they also put little chocolates on pillows...but I just do the toilet paper
