My girls call their father's parents -
Grandma & Poppa
And they call my parents -
Nana & Gabba
They used to try and call my Dad "Grandad" but found it hard so came up with Gabba one day and it has just stuck!

My mother is Nan (she didnt want to be nana or grnadma cos that made her sound too old, she was 40 when DS was born )
My ex's parents are nana and grandad
Jae doesnt see my mum much, and DPs dad doesnt interact with her at all so no names from her for them yet (both my father and DPs mother are deceased), but when his mum was alive, she was nana Griff, and he was poppy Griff (part of their last name, and is his nickname)
When I was growing up all grandparents were just grandma and grandad, but we added their last name to differentiate between them.

This is an issue for me - as both sets of grandparents want to be nana and grandad, as they already have lots of grandchildren that know them by that title (and both our mothers think grandma sounds old) but I think it is really confusing for Clara!
I try to get her to call them "Grandad ... (Christian name)" but it is hard to get that to stick - she'll confuse the two names, or just use Grandad.
Has anyone had this problem and is it really a problem? DH doesn't seem to think it matters and IMO it should be his parents who change their titles, as C has had far more to do with my parents, our ILs she sees maybe twice a year.

woah, quite the selection.
My mom will be 50 when bubs is born - she doesnt want to sound old! She was going for jaja (or yaya) which apparently is greek - not that we're greek, i think she just liked the name.
Though to be fair, i think she will be called by her name, i call both my parents by name, they've never been Mom or Dad. My mom said its cuz i was such a pain as a baby they didnt sweetly say "Go to mummy" they were more saying "Jill, take this damn baby away NOW!"
anakk - if she only sees them once or twice a year, can't they both have the same name? It shouldnt be too confusing if she hardly sees the other set. And when she's a bit older she will learn to diferentiate on her own...? Just my two cents.
|

Anakk, I called my grandfathers 'grandad *surname*' (just 'grandad' when speaking to them directly) and there was never a problem with it.

DH's mum & dad chose Poppa & Nana, DH's paternal grandparents are Poppa & Nana (now deceased), DH's maternal grandmother was also Nana (also recently deceased), & yes it confuses the kids sometimes- they end up being "Poppa-who-lives-in-TePuke" etc. My mum is Noni (pronounced Nonnie- she was 36 when I had ds & declared herself too young for anything else), my stepdad is Papa Des, my grands are Poppa ("mama's-Poppa") & Mama. I want to be Gran, DH will be Grumps/ Grumpy.

The kids agree too, particularly with the Grumps for DH, they think it's hilarious, =). (He's a gruff big softie, my friends nick-name him Papa Bear). DHs parents are nanny and poppa (at MILs request, DD is first grandchild) which is fine but I secretly hope DD calls her nana as I cant stand nanny (no offence to anyone out there that thinks otherwise, its just not for me as it sounds like, well, a nanny instead of a grandparent)
