Ok so everyone is properly gonna think this is abit stupid....

Ive never had one at all, been with my partner nearly 4 years now, im only 19, and after DS was born midwife told me it would be best to get one done, i had about 6 doctors and people looking "down there" when i had DS and i didnt really care, but before labour i did and now i do again, for some reason i just cant bring myself to go in and have it done or even make an appointment for that matter....i owuld be fine if my midwife did it but that's not realistic or a possiability lol...Am i the only one like this and if not how did you over come it ?

Didn't want to read and run, but do you have a close friend or family member who can go with you?

I'd recommend going to someone who does them all the time - do you have Family Planning? Then at least it won't be too uncomfortable and reasonably quick. A good smear taker will put you at ease too.

It's not like I enjoy smears but I want to look after my health for the sake of my son so that motivates me.

I was fine with people checking in Preg and even the doctor doing it after the birth at about 6 weeks post to check my stitches but - smears freak me out!

Hmm I would get someone to go with you, or if it makes it any better, get a female to do it...

TBH I've had a couple and received a letter to get one done a couple of months ago but keep delaying it... I would say it's uncomfortable but mainly because I tense up but honestly it's not that bad! You just have to relax which is the hard part!

But they are important so do it for your lil man! I'm going to book mine in now for next week! You've a. reminded me and b. inspired me!

Don't be scared cause they do it all the time and just let them know that you are worried about it. They will be use to that!

I've had so many smears and worse done up there and anyone who has had to be up there has been really nice etc even though I've had so many of them.

i get them pretty much every year also since i was 16 (now 27), i have had some bad experiences where it was really uncomfortable, but if you find a nice lady who you feel happy with you will be able to relax.

i go to my gyneacologiest to get it done purely because she is gentle, she is considerate and the other thing is she has seen it all before lol.. i also have a male gynae that has performed my surgeries but i would not let him touch me if i was awake! its important to feel comfortable, then you wont fear having it done..

perhaps you can ask a friend who has had someone nice and go and see them??

Sorry a bit OT but - Can you get them done while you are pregnant? I am due for my three yearly one but have been unsure about whether to do it now or wait until after this baby is born.

Hmm I have the same problem, never had one done as I've only been with DP just over a year and got preg pretty quick.

Well I sucked it up went to the female doctor and got one done at my 6 week check up. Only to get a letter a couple of weeks later saying she didn't do it properly and I have to go get another one done.

Which honestly I can't be bothered!!!

Has anyone else had that too? Needing to go in again cause the doctor stuffed up.
Bit off topic too :(

I always thought whats the point when you're prgenant, they usually recommend doing it 3 mths after bubs is born.

I was just tLking about smears with my mw yesterday as I am overdue. I was told not to get it done when I was pregnant last time due to mc'ing two weeks before falling pregnant with DS. I didn't get around to it after having DS and my mw told me yesterday not to do it while I'm pregnant and to have it done when DS/DD has their 3 month jabs next year.

I hate them too but with wanting to stay healthy for DS's sake so will do it asap next time!

I had one the other week, and actually felt it alot less uncomfortable, must be cos I have had a bubs now. Nurse at GPs did it, they do them all the time.

I am exactly the same- I think it's because I feel my bits are back to being mine now! lol. I just get it done because I know how important it is, but I do understand! :)

Delli I don't think you can, I remembering being due for one, or overdue but because I was pregnant my mw told me not to bother but to get it done at the 6 week check (post baby - but I didn't...)

Totally normal to feel a bit weirded out. I am exactly the same. Never liked it before pregnancy (but had them done anyways cos I had to), didnt mind the whole birth part and now after having a baby its weird again.

I have had one done about a month ago, because it was due. It wasnt as uncomfortable as before pregnancy so that was a pleasant surprise

Just close your eyes and think happy thoughts

It doesn't bother me at all. Could care less. They chose the profession so it serves them right they have to look down there all day
Seriously though, go get it done. I had a funny smear last year and had to go for a colposcopy and after that a LEETZ where they remove bits of your cervix that have funny cells. I just had the follow up colposcopy this week as bubs came in between so fingers crossed all is okay. I need to go for yearly smears now to keep and eye out. I was only 26 when they found the abnormal cells so it can start really early. Not worth the risk at all.

Totally agree that it can start early.. I've never had a clear smear and I've been having them since I was 19

Go get done.

My first smear came back abnormal, so I had a repeat one at 6 months after.

Yes it hurts but only for 2 seconds - sorry TMI but no worse than when DP gets a bit eager and rams your cervix during BD

Dont worry too much about the so called pain Bubie, i got so worked up about it before i went (the girls at work exaggerating) and i was tense but there was no pain just the slightest discomfort and that was mostly cos i was tense! definitely similar to BDing if its a little too rough the moment she had it in i relaxed and felt nothing and it was really quick too! I am definitely a lot more willing to go back with that as my first experience

Don't get it done when you're PG. My MW was saying that it can be more difficult because of the internal changes that happen and b/c you get some natural changes in the cells during pregnancy anyway.

I was about to say that ^^

I got one done at about 6 weeks preg, because i didnt know better but have since found out its a bit of a no-no, introducing weird things into your vagina isnt really the way to go and as Flissty said all the cells are changing around so there is no point.

I have *heard* that getting a smear during early pregnancy can contribute to a m/c - i dont know if that is true or not, and i'm not saying it to scare but maybe is something to question doc about if you still want a smear.

To the OP: I was horrified about the whole idea but in the end it wasnt that bad. The weird part is undressed and getting all concealed on a bed under a sheet/blanket. I always think whats the point in this modesty cover when i know what you're about to do!? But its really easy and is uncomfortable but doesnt hurt. And only takes a few minutes, youd be suprised. If you have a male gyn, you can request a female nurse be present as well.

I was TERRIFIED and I mean terrified of having one done!! I was even too scared to ring up. I procrastinated for years! Then I had DS went through many internals and stuff during labour etc so kinda lost my dignity(it did come back though!), and when he was 4 months old I suddenly thought, no I HAVE to go and have this done, for his sake, and mine of course.
So I called up, felt sick doing it, but better once Id made the call. I booked it for as soon as possible and went in at 8.30am(I felt sick and was beside myself with nerves), got it done and it totally wasnt as bad as I thought! It did hurt, because I wasnt relaxing, but I have issues with that during BD too it took like 30 seconds maybe! and that was it!
It came back normal, and I had my second one when DD was 5 months, now I dont have to have another for 3 years :)

When you have your first one ever you need the next a year later, and if thats all good then no more for 3 years.

Go and book it hun, its soo important, and for like 1 mins discomfort that could save your life, why not do it

Also, they are very discreet, my nurse gets me to lie on my side and I have a sheet over me, and she only lifts it enough to do the smear so you dont feel all exposed and stuff!

I used to be absolutely terrified of getting smears done (Even though I've had the same female doctor since I was 14!). I just used to get so upset and panic! (and I admit, I even started crying after my first one, although it didn't hurt at all, I was just being a sook!)

I found what worked for me and got me over the fear was taking my mp3 player along and listening to a favourite song nice and loud! I found it such a great distraction I didn't really feel anything.

Now the fear is gone and it doesn't bother me at all - Maybe give it a go
