Hi there

I started DS on some purees earlier in the week and thought I would try BLW a couple of days ago. I gave him a finger of raw, peeled pear probably about the length of his finger and about 1cm wide. He seemed quite keen and then sucked the whole thing into his mouth! I have to admit I totally freaked out and retrieved it causing him (and me) some upset.

I did pluck up the courage to let him have another go. He did the same again but I sat on my hands and lo and behold, out it popped a few seconds later. It had a few gum marks on it but no real chunks from it. Is this what he will do as part of BLW? Or do I need to make the pieces bigger and chunkier?

Sorry am very new to this as my first DS was fed puree's etc.

I am new to this BLW thing too, but I would probably make the pieces a bit longer so he can hold onto it and suck on it at the same time. Normally the pieces I give Tom would be about the length of my finger or a bit longer.

I would give him something bigger - more like a chunk he can grab in his whole hand and naw/suck/chew on. we started at 20 weeks (about a week after your DS) and he started with chunks of broccoli and cauliflower (the stalks are easy for them to hold)

Yep - long, finger length sticks are the way to go!!! We also made sure we used quite ripe pears, as DD had teeth and I didn't want her biting off too big pieces at the start. Totally recommend orange kumara chips...

Def recommend the orange kumara chips!

I go with about 7-10cm in length so about the length of your middle finger so they can hold half in their hand and still have some to naw/chew/suck on. Also in the early days that's all they do is just lick it or suck it/chew it. Nothing actually gets eaten much so a lot of it does go to waste so try not to go too over board.

he needs to be able to hold one end like a handle and stick the other in his mouth. thats why broccoli is a good thing to start with cause it has its own little handle.

Thanks everyone. Had another go this evening with a piece of toast. He seemed to enjoy it but nothing actually went in! He, too, has teeth so will try to find some very ripe fruit and roast some veges for him.

Don't fret. It took my daughter a few weeks to actually eat anything significant. The first time I gave her carrot she just sucked on it. But a few days later she snipped them into little bits with her gums that she spat out. Then it took probably another week or so before she actually swallowed any.

Remember it's more about them learning what to do with the objects in their mouth at the moment. Also - take a peek in the photo gallery BLW thread. Lots of photos and some ideas of what people give their kidlets. Oh and I agree with the others. Broccoli is an excellent first food.
