Hi there ladies,

Some time ago i was an active member on oh baby and had 2 beautiful wee girls who are now 5 and 7. My husband had a vasectomy about 4 years ago and we are now considering having it reversed. i was wanting to know if anybody here has had success following a vasectomy reversal and what costs were involved in the process.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

i know nothing about them sorry - but wanted to say woohoo on getting him to get it reversed! i suppose a lot would depend on what sort of vasectomy it was.

Not me but I have a friend who's husband had a vasectomy after the birth of their second child. He then had it reversed later and they now have 7 sons, so I'd consider it successful

Yay Janine, I hope it goes well and you have lots more of those beautiful babies you make!

My dad had a vas reversal a few years back now, he and his wife now have a gorgeous 1 year old daughter.
Not sure on the costs front, as he had it done in the UK.

Good luck!!

yeah i thought about that - they did mikes original op, but i think that reversals are done in hospital as they tend to be microsurgery...

he's going round and round in circles. It may not end up happening. lolol. we'll see. it will depend alot on costs and surgery stuff me thinks.

My DH had a reversal approx 5 years after the original op. Both ops done by the same surgeon at Citymed in Auckland. I think from memory it was about $800 for the reversal, but that was about 6-7 years ago now. Our reversal was successful, but what 'normal' post reversal tests did not identify was the fact that my DH's body was producing anti-bodies that were killing the sperm, hence we TTC unsuccessfully for 2.5 years before more comprehensive tests highlighted this fact. My basic understanding is that because of the length of time between original op and reversal, DH's body interpreted the sperm as disease and therefore produced anti-bodies to kill it. So a good body really! We ended up having ICSI IVF and now have a beautiful 3 year old DD.
So anyway, all I would recommend is making sure you have anti-body tests as well as normal post-op tests so that you know definately one way or the other as we spent alot of time thinking that something else was to blame.

DHs reversal was done about 18 months after the original at Citymed, and it's definitely microsurgery. It's a lot more aggressive than a vasectomy in terms of effects. Cost was $6,000 through Fertility Associates. There are other options rather than having a reversal too, but the reversal is the more likely option. The reversal was technically successful, but due to other factors, we still had to go down the ICSI route. Due to the reversal, we would have had to wait another 3 years for public funding so we ended up paying for everything ourselves. http://www.fertilityassociates.co.nz/Fertility-treatments/Male-infertility.aspx - Link for FA info

Wow itchyfeet, you've had quite a different experience to us. Even though we had a reversal, when we went to Fert Associates Auckland we got straight on the publicly funded waiting list. We paid for private anyway as the wait list was 12 months at that stage and I didn't want to wait, but we did meet the criteria for public funding. And wow $6,000! Ours was no where near that.

Hi sorry this is a bit late, just hoping someone can answer a question for me. (No one I know has been in this situation!!) I've had an estimate from Fertility Associates for $9000 but the citymed website says it only cost $1200. Is something not included in the citymed price? The price difference seems enormous.
