Hi

DS has caught his fathers cold, and it has an awful cough. Chesty as.... Just got back from the Doc and they can't do anything for him cause hes 15mths, and cough medicines are for 2 and up.

He is coughing so much it makes him throw up and very scared.

Does anyone have any helpful ways to ease the cough?

Aww poor wee man. My DS is also coughing lots too and has thrown up as a result. Perhaps a steam inhaler maching which you can hire from the chemist to use in his room overnight or for naps? I have heard that you can use a slow cooker too but no idea how - might be worth a google!

Vicks baby balsam rub on his chest could be good too. Otherwise lots of cuddles from mum is also good medicine! I have been doing that this morning and have slug trails of snot all over my shoulders! Think I'll be staying in the rest of the day!

Hope he improves soon.

Thanks for those ideas.

He and I have slept together the past couple of nights. I got sick of getting up to give him cuddles, so now I just cuddle him while we sleep. Hopefully it doesn't last long..DH has been coughing for over a week, and thats taking cough medicine!!!!

I can't wait for him to be two!

HuMum, I've been swearing by the weleda cough elixir this winter - works so well for H. I give him 3mL every couple of hours for one day, then gradually decrease the frequency as his cough gets better.

Rub vicks on the soles of his feet then pop some socks on him. Sounds crazy I know but it does ease the coughing.

Crock pot in his room filled with hot water, put some vicks in it, put it on low and leave a gap with the lid for the steam to escape. Keep the door closed so the room really stinks of it and raise the head end of the bed. You'll need to air the room while hes not asleep though otherwise it gets rather damp. But it does help with coughing and breathing.

we went to after hours with mack cos he had a fever, cough and runny nose a while ago. he was 15 months old and prescribed tixylix and it worked a treat. it says age 2+ on the box but since he is 12kg the doc said it was fine.

we found macks cough lasted for ages cos all the snot was running down the back of his throat which was so gross but we have one of those sucker things to help clear that out too. thought id let you know in case that is contributing to the cough

My dr recommended dissolving half a tsp of honey in warm water and let him sip that. According to him this has proven to work better than storebought cough medicines. And since your DS is over a year he's allowed honey.

Thanks for all the great ideas.

I love the vicks on his feet one. I suggested my husband try that one since all the cough medicines he has tried are doing nothing to ease his cough.

Last night tried the vicks and snot sucker (funny a a baby he thought it was a hoot, as a toddler he thinks its a monster!) either way we had a much more peaceful sleep. So thanks!!!!

Manuka honey is suppose to be the best type of honey to use.

Anyway of getting it into them e.g. sandwiches works.

Arianne is always getting a cough I also can't wait till she is 2.
