Any body elses baby been anemic?

If so, what did they do? If you were BFing, did you get put on iron pills? Or did they give something to the baby?? I'm BFing, so a few people have thought they might put me on pills (I have no idea what my iron levels are like mind you...)

DS has had 3 blood tests so far, another one in a week to check his iron levels.... I'm thinking surely after this one, if its no better, they'll do something about it??? But what?!

We have haemacromatosis (sorry, can't spell it) in the family, my Dad goes high iron, but my cousin goes incredibly low iron with it....

The girls were given iron as standard when they left the Neonatal unit - it was in a liquid form called Ferrodan, and they had 1ml per day, which we just syringed in before their first feed of the day (bottle fed a mix of formula and EBM). Beware - it stains anything that it touches though!!! All babies who leave our Neonatal Unit are prescribed it along with Vitadol C.

My DS was also given iron drops when we left the NICU (in Singapore). He was fully breastfed at the time, I used to express a feed a day though and put the drops in a bottle with some EBM. Or use a syringe and get it in that way. He had vitamin drops (I can't remember whether they were "just" Vit C though) as well.

My DD was prem so we went home with Ferrodan which lasted till she was 3 months I think, but when she was 8 months she was retested because of her continual illnesses and she was found to be anemic. So it was back on the ferrodan again for about 6 months from memory. Once she had teeth it was a real pain coz not only does ferrodan stain everything it touches (clothes bibs etc) but it can also stain their teeth so I had to be real careful about brushing them.

Edited to add that she also had vitadol C both times to help with absorption of the iron. I used to just syringe it into her mouth and she never objected.

Meant to say too that haemacromatosis runs in my family too but we all had testing done years ago and I am not a carrier so unless my ex has it then my DD can't have it. She has had major issues with low iron though for no real reason (she loves her meat and veges).

Thanks guys, hopefully his blood tests come back fine though!!
It seems to be really common in prems, but DS was born at 38+2, so the docs were a bit surprised. The paeds still called him a prem though?!

Mummy becks, who was that?

was it me? My son has low iron. we had him tested just before he turned four I think. It looks like his iron is okay, but he can't store it. we have had real difficulty getting supplements into him. Spirulina is good (Taine won't touch) as is flax seed ouil for absorbtion. NEtierh of these are probably suitable for such a wee one though.
