So my little 6 and a half month old boy has started playing up on the boob, it takes ages to feed him, he fusses, he arches his back, if he does feed it's lucky to be 5 mins each side, I'm getting very frustrated with it and I think he is too.
My mum told me that I weaned myself at 7 months so maybe DS is doing the same. He has solids for breakfast, a little bit for lunch and dinner, I always offer boob first before all these "meals" then usually wait half an hour to an hour before giving solids. After his bath I'll offer him the breast and then we top him up with formula which he happily takes without protest and he takes alot! He also has a dream feed of formula at 10-10.30ish. Anyway I'm wanting advice on whether I should be topping him up with formula during the day feeds. Any advice would be great thanks!! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Thats what DS started doing at 8mths. I realised that he just didn't want to be missing out on anything while his back was turned. He was more then happy to feed from a bottle as he could watch what was going on around him. So I ended up weaning him at 9mths.

We went through some changes just before 6 months as well. After a visit to plunket we changed the way we were feeding - 1 boob when he wakes up and the 2nd boob before he goes back to bed with solids and play time in between. It worked well for us - could be worth a shot.
Otherwise I'd be looking at offering a formula topup ( just might be the beginning of the end for BF) Also you might want to mention the arching bit to your dr in case there is reflux causing a problem. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Yeah I think thats the problem - he is likes to see what is going on!
I think the arching of the back is more wanting to see what is going on rather than reflux, we have never had a problem with reflux and he isn't showing any other signs of having it - but will keep an eye on him.  ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Lisette, Lily has been doing this, it's sooooo annoying esp as she likes to stay latched on... Ouch.
Do what you think feels right. Lily feeds for a max of 5-10 mins and just 1 side per feed to but each baby is different. How's he going weight wise? You could always pop into a plunket family centre? ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Esme still does this at times. I just let her have a play and try again later. It works most of the time. I also found waiting until she 'asked' for it with her hungry grizzle she would feed better too.

Do you want to keep BF him?
If you do, then try feeding somewhere boring like his or your room. Maybe let him have 5 or 10 minutes of playing after you get him up before you feed him so he's not desperate to get to his toys. If you don't want to keep BF him, then offer top-ups for a start and I expect he'll quickly switch to the bottle. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

could be a bit of distraction at this age or not quite hungry enough. one sided feeding may help him get a bigger/faster letdown (longer time since that boob had a feed) if he's getting impatient, or stretching out the feed a bit so maybe 4.5 hrly so he's really motivated.

The more u give formula the less milk supply u will have. If u dont offer any formula then baby will feed more from you, producing more milk.
Lots of babies are easily distracted whether they are bf or ff especially the older they get. DS is better now, but he still wont feed well i public. I take him in his room, and let him play with my necklace or sing to him to keep his attention. |

Yah I would think that he is getting distracted. I have been feeding Ben in his room for 6mths + as he was getting distracted, and he will only feed at playcentre if he is really thirsty.
I would suggest feeding in his room away from others where it is quiet, or if it is just you guys home then turn the tv/radio off (or mute  ) to reduce distractions------------- Lindsey

It sounds like distraction and is he teething ? Ds was like that for 3 weeks and then he got his first tooth. He is still distracted during the day and makes upfor it with extra night feeds.
I agree Kellz BF is a supply and demand thign so offeringbubs formula top ups will affect your supply. |

DS does this too and it is so frustrating, especially as I know he is hungry. But once he has had his initial thurst satisfied, he would prefer to look around. I feed immedialtely when I get him out of bed, before he fully wakes up and this works. If I wait too long it's a bit of a mission to get him to drink. eta The other thing I do is switch sides and sometimes that can be enough to get him to have a good drink. Somtimes I can switch sides 4-5 times during a feed, but it means that he does have a good feed (eventually) so then a good sleep. ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">
