Hi all,
Question for the mum's out there ... this summer we are having our first baby and we have been invited on an overnight trip on a large boat for a wedding (sleeps about 60 people so very large). If baby arrives on due date, he/she will be about 2 - 3 weeks old at the time and I just wonder what the opinions out there are of whether or not we should accept the invitation. I have looked on the boat/ship website and they say they "do not encourage infants on board". There will be some getting on and off via a aluminium runabout... What do you all think? Bx |

Can you contact someone in person to talk to at the company the runs the trip? A 2-3 week old is pretty portable although you may have trouble fitting a portacot in a cabin! Re the getting on/off make sure you have a carrier like a Moby or sling so you have both hands free. But I think you really need to talk to someone "in the know" to see whether they discourage infants for the ambience of the trip or for actual safety reasons (and I'd have thought safety reasons would relate more to more mobile babies, but who knows!) ------------- SJ Callum - Dec 2008 Daniel - Oct 2010 |

The other things I'd also suggest you think about;
Will you be feeling like you want to be away from home with a baby that young? We went to an overnight wedding when our DD was 7 weeks old and I only just felt happy doing it. Although they do sleep most of the time so that is a plus. Are you happy exposing your very young child to all those people (and their diseases)? Because lets face it, everyone will want to cuddle and kiss your darling. Don't get me wrong though. No way am I judging you wanting to go! I was just really surprised at the difference between what I thought I would want to do (when we RSVP'd) and what I actually felt comfortable doing once I had that tiny little thing in my arms. ------------- Adoring Mum to Talisin 8/9/11 and Kiara 18/01/10 |

I don't really 'want' to go ... mainly because I'm not so sure how much fun it will be for me as a tired new mum. Thesaff... that was a great point about all the people wanting to kiss the baby - urgh. I think I would rather be home and see the photos later. Thanks kiwisj... will also have another look into the safety side of things. I am erring towards not attending at this stage ... unless bubs is v early and older than anticipated. Bx |

We went to a wedding when DS was 10 days old. It was an overnight trip. We took my parents with us so they could help out with DS while we were at the ceremony, they stayed in our motel room across the road with him and I popped back and forth for feeds. We had to take a HEAP of stuff. It was just two days but we had a suitcase for DH and I and one for DS with complete changes of bedding, about 8 changes of clothes, nappies etc etc. (he was a really spilly reflux baby though so we always had to have heaps of extra everything). We only just fit into our hotel room, let alone a wee boat cabin.
And like you say, I was exhausted and sore still. We ended up leaving the wedding at about 8.30pm as I was just so tired. Unfortunately you wouldn't really have that option being on a boat.
Don't let me put you off though, that was just my experience and you won't really know how you feel until you're doing it. -------------

souns like the right decision may be to stay home.
Although bubs will probably sleep the whole time it will be stressful and tiring for you, all the people wanting to hold/kiss baby, trying to feed when not used to feeding yet etc |

I personally didnt really leave the house for the first 10 days after baby arrived (by choice, it just felt right) so I cannot imagine being interested in an overnighter with no chance of escape!!!
Yes baby's are very portable at that age but what if you go two weeks over, or have a c-section or have a nasty tear or take some time setting in to BFing etc. Personally I felt the first six weeks were a huge adjustment, not the least of which your hormones will be crashing down to normal levels. If it were a 'normal' wedding I'd say RSVP yes now and just see how you feel a day or two before hand but I'm guessing the whole boat thing is going to cost a fair bit of money so would be more fair on the couple to say now if you gut instinct is that it doesnt sound like much fun. -------------

I would personally say no - mainly just because of the not being able to escape to go home..... I was still pretty emotional (crying for no reason) in the second and third weeks, I think those were my two hardest weeks, the initial adrenaline and major high has worn off and starting to come down to earth with the sleep deprivation and trying to figure out feeding... we went to an overnight wedding when bubs was 7 weeks old, and that was actually really easy - it was out of town, a 3-hour drive and she slept the entire way, and slept most of the wedding reception... we lasted till around 9.30 I think .... there is a huge difference before and after that 6-week mark I think. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

in my opinion... i wouldnt go.
there is a lot going on emotionally, pysically...your v-jay jay will be sore, you will be exausted with sleep deprivation, your boobs will be like balloons, you may have feeding issues, baby not sleep well, colic or wind ... at least at home if you feel the need to hibinate in your PJs for 3 days you can.. (trust me i did) theres no pressure to socialise.. you may have family and partner support etc I dont want to burst your bubble.. just think about it and all the possibles... and have you considered going over your due date as many babies do .... then what would you have to pay in advance... no refund ?? good luck with your decision. Maybe next summer instead ? |

If you want to go, then go for it! We went to Prana (a 3 day music and arts festival) when DD was 2 weeks old because Daddy was working there. No problems at all. She was perfectly happy sleeping on me or DP in the sling most of the time. We stayed in a wee caravan and there were portaloos so wasn't roughing it too much. I was glad we went, it was so nice just to chill out and enjoy a bit of the summer and not feel like I had to stay at home. We brought a basket for her to sleep in but she ended up just sleeping with me. I imagine a boat would be fine, bubs might like the motion!
If you do decide to go, I'd highly recommend a sling or frontpack to wear baby in. Good luck with whatever you decide  ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I would go! I was out and about with my DS when he was 5 days old (to brother-in-law's birthday party) and took him for a trip flying from Auckland to Christchurch when DH had a conference there when he was 5 weeks old.
He was great -- he was really portable at that stage, slept most of the time, and I really enjoyed getting out and about after just being home by myself. On people kissing your baby, etc, if you are breastfeeding, my understanding is that your baby will have your immunities pretty much until around 6 months of age, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. One tip -- I agree with KiwiSJ a portacot will be too big -- we used a bassinet/carrycot that came with our pram for DS to sleep in, it worked really well. ------------- [IMG]http://lb3f.lilypie.com/rGG7p13.png] |
