T is 5.5 months old, has been fully FF since he was 12 weeks old, and since starting on solids (at 4.5 months) he’s developed eczema on his cheeks and behind his knees.
I first noticed it after I fed him baby rice, when his cheeks flared up. I stopped giving him baby rice and since then he has just been having fruit and vegetables and a wee bit of chicken and his cheeks cleared up. On Saturday I gave him some avocado on a crusket and when he woke up on Sunday morning his eczema had flared up and his cheeks were all red and angry. So, I think it’s back to just fruit and vegetables for now. I’ve been consulting Dr Google, and while the doctors seem to say there’s no link between food and eczema, many of the Mamas on here seems to think differently. I’ve just realised that cruskets have rice flour in them, so with his reaction to them and the baby rice, maybe it’s rice? Or perhaps he’s just not ready yet to move beyond fruit and vege? I bought some Eczema Shield probiotics in the weekend, which I’ve started adding to his bottle. I’ve also got some HealthE fatty cream, which I’m putting on his cheeks before and after each sleep. From what I can gather what works for one person, doesn’t necessarily work for another, and it can just be a lot of trial and error to find out what works! But does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions as to what I can do to help ease it and minimise its reoccurrence? Thanks in advance for your help. This is something I don’t really know much about, so am keen to get up to speed as quickly as possible and also to get as much advice/ideas as possible. |

Same thing happened when we gave DD baby rice and it was her worst flare up imo. I stopped it after 3 days and it cleared up after a few more days but she was super grizzly from it too.
I wonder if the cruskets have something similar in ingredients to the baby rice? Is there a reason he started solids at that age too? Just out of curiosity? You could possibly visit a doctor who may be helpful. Mine wasn't. We have the cream and put it on at every nappy change and use it as a soap substitute for baths. We also have a steroid cream for mega nasty patches but that's only for really bad patches as it's horrible stuff anyway and can think the skin. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Dairy and wheat seem to be the main culprits with ezcema. For DS it seems wheat is his trigger. I have been wheat free for almost a month now and it has made a huge difference.
Does baby rice have dairy in it? (I've never used it so not sure sorry), cruskits definately have dairy. Otherwise, I'd think it was perhaps due to wheat. I wouldn't have thought it would be from rice, I'm fairly sure that is a low allergen food. -------------

Depending on the baby rice, yes it does have dairy or soy in it. If you want to try it again, Only organics is a very "clean" baby rice.

We used Farex Baby rice if anyone knows?
I do know that if I eat too much bread, I eat a lot of soup and used to easily eat about 4-6 slices of bread with it but DDs eczema flared up quite bad when I did that too. Also if I eat too much dairy her eczema flares up quite bad too. However I can still easily eat all these things but in moderation like 2-3 times a week and not every day if that makes sense. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

i think farex dairy free but we used the pear and banana one which made my son flare up..normal is fine...
Liam had the same issues as your little one and it got worse and worse till we found he was allergic to dairy and egg. ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

DS had excema around that age but he seems to have grown out of it so fingers crossed for T.
In the end I found Lucas pawpaw worked really well for DS and at the sign of it coming up, it would keep it away. May help ease it a bit. Keeping a food diary is a good idea too. I get excema myself and it is definately trial and error and can be so fustrating. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| In terms of creams, by far the best thing we have used is Nutraplus. It is the only thing so far that clears DD's skin up well. |

Thanks everyone for your ideas. The HealthE fatty cream doesn't seem to be clearing up his cheeks, so I have made a Drs appt. I don't want to use anything stronger, but suppose I may have to to clear this flare up. I'll try the paw paw ointment and the Nutraplus as well.
Lil Nic, I started him on solids cause he was showing the signs, and then one day he was sitting on my knee while I ate some gingerbread and he grabbed a bit and popped it in his mouth. I'm also starting work in a couple of weeks, so I wanted to get him established before he started daycare, and I also wanted to see all those cute faces when he tried food for the first time myself! |

Fair enough, some kids out grow eczema while others don't fx the doctors appt can shed some light!

I found that xma-ease works really well for my son and its steroid free. We have also started on minerals prescribed by a naturopath and cut out wheat, dairy and eggs from my diet (he is BF). Ive noticed a huge improvement since doing this and he was REALLY bad!
He has his worst flare up after starting farex and rusks so it looks like an intolerance to wheat, which might be what your little man has? I found my GP would just prescribe steroids, but if you want another approach I would recommend a naturopath. Good luck  ------------- http://lilypie.com">
