DD has been given pureed food since about 5mths old, recently I've started making the food lumpier and am giving her soft finger foods. However, she gags so much on lumpy food and finger foods. How long does it usually take babies to get used to swallowing?
I know it's natural, but for how long? She had reflux fairly bad for a few months but has grown out of that.
I'm at the stage where I worry when she puts big pieces of food in her mouth as she doesn't really suck or chew pieces of food, just swallows them whole!! Very worrying when she thrashes her legs and gags then vomits

We found DD did this as well for a while, i tended to puree most of it but then mix in some fork mashed food as well and gradully make it more lumpy. With finger foods i found she would shove so much in her mouth that she would often gag and i was so scared she'd choke so i would rip toast and things in to little peices for her to pick up.
I also found cruskits really great as she would more such on them and they disolve. She now crunches away on them and has never gagged on them.

DS still does this sometimes with some foods, and also when he is unwell he only wants pureed food or his milk! Also, with fingerfood he sometimes stuffs so much in his mouth that he gags... trial and error.
According to my mum, I was eating pureed food until I was about 2, and even then some lumps made me gag (and some still do!).

Jake still does it now occassionally, and to be honest.. I do it from time to time too! (piggy I am LOL).
I dont think there is a time frame tbh, when your little one learns to chew it will likely happen a lot less until its only very occassionally.
We actually had more success wth finger foods than lumpy mash... he still isnt a big fan of lumps (actually spits out any lumps in his mash potato, everyone's a critic right LOL).

We have just started BLW and thats the worst part of it for me! I got so scared the first time it happened and DS did a huge projectile vomit. Since then he has gagged a bit, not as bad but its still frightening.
