So DD has just turned eight months old and is breastfed about 5 times or so a day. We started solids about two months ago - and that is going well - she has about 1/2 cup at breakfast and dinner and a small amount at lunch.
The last three days or so she has started to refuse an afternoon breastfeed. She cries and there is no way she wants anything. Yesterday afternoon we were going out so really wanted to feed her after her nap. Again she refused my breast but thought I'd try some food - well she ate a whole sachet of food and probably could have eaten more. Then for dinner she ate alot more than usual. She still feeds well first thing in the morning, and at night before bed - even after she ate a big dinner! My question is, do you think she is self weaning? I was planning on cutting out the afternoon feed anyway but has she already done it herself? ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Looks like it. I would just go with the flow. The one thing I've been amazed at as a first time mum is that if they are hungry for milk, no amount of food will cut it and vice versa. So if she wants food, go with that and continue with the BFs that she wants. And don't be surprised if she goes on a mini BF strike soon. Yeah - I'd just go with the flow. She sounds like she is good at letting you know what she wants! DS went on a nursing strike at around 8/9 mths and didn't want a bar of me for 5 very long days - but he's back BF now. Its so stressful but I reckon you'll be looking back a week from now wondering why you were stressing. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Even though we're doing formula about a month or so back Cooper did a similar thing and cut back from 5 feeds to 4 feeds a day, though it was the feed I'd usually do around 10am that has now moved to more like 12pm - and I also switched lunch and milk around so he has food first.

Happened with DS2 just 2 weeks ago, refused all breastfeeds all together. Totally self weaned! Was so hard as he was feeding 4 times during the day or more and at least 3 times at night. So i had heaps of milk still do. I just kept offering and offering, he may go back on he may not.

Quitting bf in favour of bottle is common because the teat is a lot less work for a baby.
In answer to the original question, your baby is eating well enough to drop down to four feeds/day and I think that's exactly what she has done.  -------------  |

| I wouldn't think she is self weaning, but just dropping that one feed. We do demand feeding and my 20 month old over his course of feeding has fluctuated from feeding every other day to still feeding 3 times a day somedays. They know what they need so just follow their lead. |

I dont think its self weaning either, dropping a feed is perfectly normal now she is getting more substantial amound of food. I'm sure at that age DS was on 4 feeds, dropped to 3 feeds around 10mths and two feeds from 12mths (tho I did purposfully drop the middle day feed).
I'd go with the flow and still offer for a while yet and she might change her mind depending on the day -------------

T-Rex I'm not too sure what it was, he just didn't want to BF was and is having 3 meals plus MT and AT and water with meals. I think my milk changed due to that time of the month.!
He had been having one bottle each night since 4 months old. I offered boob t day he took it, which was good to relieve the pressure. I had started weaning him at night dropping his feeds at night and increasing his food and BF during the day and that's when he stopped BF. Anyway sorry to over take your thread, hope it's just a feed being dropped this happened with DS1 and he fed till 15 months. -------------
