It looks like we're headed off to America at Christmas to be with family. Has anyone traveled there recently. I know we're a in a visa wavered program country but what's this ESTA thing the website goes on about? Honestly, that website is so full of jargon I fall asleep after the first sentence.

You have to fill out the ETSA for all travellers before you go. This is instead of filling out the form on the plane I believe.

We went to USA in May last year so things might have changed but hope this helps.
If you book through a travel agent they'll give you the info so you can apply online or you can do a search for ETSA or visa waiver. You have to fill in a visa waiver form which is pretty simple, and we got a reply immediately saying there isnt any problems and you have a visa waiver. You'll get allocated a number that you have to give the checkin people when you check in.
You still have to fill in the green form on the plane which then goes in your passport at customs.

You also have to make sure you have a machine readable passport. All the new ones are, but would pay to check depending how old yours are

You have to make sure you fill out the form a few days in advance, but you can do it online so its super easy.

Thanks guys. That's what I thought but my brain kept melting every time I tried to read through the explanation on their website. I find it a bit amusing though that they claim you don't need a "visa" when you have to do this application - which seems pretty much like getting a visa to me.

Do they still have that question about genocide on the entry form "have you or any of your family participated in genocide?" Do they REALLY think someone is going to tick "yes" to that one?

When we were getting work visas for there my husband had done a project on aviation and defense. They asked him if he had any connections to known terrorists and if he had particpated in terriorist activities. Why bother do you think a terrorist is honest enough to say yes and blow their cover and mission. Hope you have an awesome holiday. Take empty suitcases and shop. You can get cheap osh kosh from target over there and mossimo too. Everything is cheap actually. And you get twice the baggage allowance too.

We can barely afford the tickets for that time of year, but ooooh, if the shopping is that good then the credit card might get a work out.

We were there in June last year and seemed to get through Customs much quicker with the ESTA than two years earlier without it.

The shopping is great when the sales are on which will be after Xmas. Try and get to the outlet shops if you can.

They ask these questions so they can get your signature saying you denied it. If they prove a link they can get you on falsifying documents as having a family member participate in genocide is not illegal. Not declaring it by falsifying documents is. We do it in HR all the time.
