From seven weeks old Riley slept through the night from 7-8pm only waking once around 3-6am for a feed. (I know, we were very lucky!)

That all changed two weeks ago. He now wakes anything from 3-6 times per night. We still only feed him once (or twice if he really won't settle) and rock and pat him to sleep the other times. The night this started he had had vaccinations that day and soon after he developed a cold and now seems to be getting a tooth through. I'm also aware that babies can have sleep regressions around this time, so I'm really not sure what the cause is. We put him to bed awake for night sleeps so I wouldn't have thought he would have a sleep association but who knows.

What do you think is causing this? Has anyone else had this happen? What did you do and how long did it last?

I don't have any advice Vanillabean, but exactly the same has happened to my DS. He has slept right through from 10.30-ish pm to 7-8am for months, but about a week and a half ago, started waking 3 times during the night.

I see they are exactly the same age -- could it be an age thing/growth spurt?

I also wondered if it could be the start of teething -- my DS has lots of drool, but other than that no teething signs yet.

Could be a growth spurt, Lily had one at that age.

Another thing could be, is he maybe getting ready for solids? One of the mums from my Playcentre group recently went through this and turns out baby wanted solids, she wouldn't settle unless fed so once she introduced solids during the day her baby was fine at night. But that depends on if, when your baby wakes he needs a feed to sleep and is starving or not.

Could be teeth, often they get one that is moving around, Lily did and she would be grizzly or wake a lot more.

GL hope you find it out but also another thing I just thought of is as they're getting more awake and taking in their environment they do like to look around a bit more too. Don't want to miss out etc.

Is he sore? Maybe try some pamol at night and see if that helps.

Also, not sure if you are BF or FF, but my boy started doing the same at a similar age - he has been having a formula bottle at 10pm, and we changed that to a stage 2 formula which seemed to fill him up and help him through.

Vanillabean DS did exactly the same thing!

He has slept through the night 7pm - 6/7am since he was 6 weeks old, I was shocked and pleasantly surprised! But at 4 months to the day, he started to wake up again once or twice a night. It only last about 2-3 weeks though and then went back to sleeping through.

I was told it could very well be teething or most likely a developmental thing.

Sorry I don't have much more advice - just letting you know you aren't alone!

The sleepstore have some info on this. Apparantly at about 4 months babies wake fully between each sleep cycle and are so much more aware of their surroundings, so can often begin waking more. Just try to ride it out. I'm sure he'll be back to sleeping for you in no time.

Yup, I can believe what MamaT said, Lily was doing 2 hour naps during the day, down for 2 up for one, now she does the 45 mins - 1 hour naps!

We had a similar thing where the newborn night sleep was actually pretty good and I thought wow, he's down to one wake up, we'll be sleeping through in no time... then at about 3 months he started waking more, and stopped doing the long stretch at the beginning and was almost hourly by the morning. I think it lasted 6 weeks and in that time he learnt to roll both ways and then sleep started to improve, and he started sleeping through a few times a week. But sadly that only lasted 6 weeks too and then teething started, or at least I blame teething, but could be another developmental thing too - so yeah, could be that for you as well.

Loads of babies start doing this around 4-5mths. Mine did as well. I've heard it's because they wake up fully from a sleep cycle and can't get themselves back to sleep. So at that stage I decided to teach my baby to self-settle using the Sleep Sense Programme. Within a week, he was sleeping from 7pm to 11pm and then thru to 7am.

If you're interested you can PM me I have the programme and can email it to you.
