hmmm starting to freak out a little that I really have no clue about early childhood stuff and babies! can anyone recommend a good book that is practical but not to preachy! someone has leant me 'What to expect - babies first year' - but its abit of a novel!! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I got given the NZ Pregnancy Book as a gift, and it was fabulous. It goes beyond pregnancy into caring for a new baby. It's a bit expensive though -- I think around $60, so I was pleased to get it for Christmas. You might be able to get it in the library.
Also, I wouldn't worry too much -- for your first plunket visit, you should get "Thriving under 5" for free which I use a lot, and before that visit, I found my midwives wonderful -- they showed me how to change nappies, bath the baby, everything! ------------- [IMG]http://lb3f.lilypie.com/rGG7p13.png] |

Baby Love by Robin barker
I used it so many times in the first few months. It has an index so if you are worried about something you can look it up. Such a great book. -------------

Ooh I second the Baby Love recommendation, definitely not preachy and very down to earth.
I have Jo Frost's Confident Babycare book, which is also good and have just noticed  that I also have her Supernanny book on the shelf - a good one for later on 
I'm a bit addicted to buying books  so I also have:
Gina Ford (Contented Little Baby and her Toddler book as well) - not for everyone, but I like what she has to say and it has worked well for us. What to Expect the First Year - not as easy to read as the Robin Barker one IMO and also very American. Raising Boys (Steve Biddulph) is great and I also recommend their Raising Girls book. They have a good one on being happy parents too

Kaz Cookes one for babies is 'kid-wrangling' I found it great.
There is two different issues of it though so make sure you have the one that has the NZ contacts in the back (the other has UK contacts I think) |

I found the thriving under 5 (free from plunket) and bounty book (free from hospital) to be all I needed. But google is most definitely my valued friend. I also just got the Baby led weaning book, but that's for a bit later on. My approach to parenting is very 'go with the flow' though. It might be easier to wait and see if you have any problems with anything before spending heaps on books you might never need. We have the 'call me dad' book and I don't think DH opened it often, if at all. I have a massive folder of pamphlets on every subject possible as well so all the random info I've collected is together. -------------

Have a look on Book Depository too - it can sometimes work out cheaper to buy the books from them (free shipping). I buy most of my books from them now, because of the price.

I have found the "what to expect" book way better now that I actually have a bubba!! (didn't rate it before hand...)
And, stumbled across the Robin Barker "baby love" at the library the other day...got it without really looking at it, and just in the last hour or so have been reading it...It's great! Library has great resources! |
