Well my name is KIrby and i have had numerous problems with my son Thomas's hearing and speech.
He was 6 weeks premature and since then we have had many problems including constant ear infections followed by a recent rupture of his eardrum. He has severe scar tissue in his right ear from the many ear infections and has very limited hearing in that ear and now from the recent ruptured eardrum he has no hearing im staying positive that it will return if only a little but due to the old scar tissue and now what will be new scar tissue there is a high likelyness he will loose it completely. He will be 4 in sept and has never been fitted with gromits or had anything else done to his ears and has massive speech delay he is at the same level as his brother who is 21months. Would be nice to hear from any other parents with similar problems as im at a bit of a standstill. Being a young parent aswel im not as forward to doctors about his problems im just looked at like im a useless parent and that he is fine. but after private hearing tests i have found its not me and it is his hearing and would like to know how to make doctors see he needs some help expecially before he starts school |

| Thanks yeah i am definitly going back to see a different doc. I lost thomas in the shops today because he couldnt hear me calling him so it definitly needs to be sorted asap |

Which medical centre do you go to?
When Sophie, who is nearly 7, had hear hearing problems and ear infections, I went to J'ville medical centre. I can't remember if I saw Dr Mark Adcroft or someone else. But I mentioned that it seemed Sophie was just not hearing my properly and wouldn't respond and that I was concerned, as were other people who had noticed and he referred her to ENT(ear, nose and throat) department at Wellington Hospital and eventually I got an appointment and they did their assessments and she got grommets and then they would follow up regularly to see where she was at with her hearing and wax build up. Once they get you in touch with the appropriate people it helps. As Sophie eventually got a SLT(speech and language therapist) and a teacher aid at Kindy and was supposed to get one at school, but it took about a year before the got their sh*t sorted and gave her a new one at school. I found Sophie's hearing issues, which she had from about 2 yrs old or possibly younger, affected her development in so many areas and now that she is at school it is becoming so much more obvious and that doesn't make life very pleasant for her at school. It makes me feel crap having a child with these issues, as I take it personally and think it's some how a failure on my part as a parent, though that so isn't true. I hope you manage to find a good doctor who can refer you to the appropriate people. The sooner they look into it, the sooner they can start helping him towards getting up to speed. -------------

| I will get you to tell me more about sophie at pae=renting course or maybe we could meet for cofee some time. I take thomas to the jville medical centre i might have to take him for his hearing as we have only just signed up there and havent really seen a doctor yet i know that the doc u mentioned is my doctor so hopefully he is the boys doctor aswel |

Yeah I'm definitely up for meeting up for coffee. Yeah I've found Mark Adcroft really good as a doctor. I don't always get to see him as he's quite busy usually when I want to see a doctor, so I just see whoever. I think there's only even been one doctor there I didn't like. I recall this doctor being quite good too, Tim Ngan Kee. But it so helps getting onto it this early aye. -------------

Kirby did the audiologist give you any recommendations about Thomas's hearing? If not it might be worth following that up because I would have thought they would have given you some suggestions as a start. Also, you mention that he is delayed in his speech and language development. Has he been seen by a Speech-Language Therapist at all? If not, now is definitely the time to get him seen as the public system has big waiting times and if possible it would be good to have something in place as soon as possible and before he starts school. You could phone Special Education and refer him yourself (you don't need to go through a GP for that, you can just ring and enquire about him being assessed yourself). They will want to know that his hearing is be addressed (if there is anything that can be done) so it might be worth asking the GP for a referral to ENT at the same time. |

Kirby, another though - stolen from another thread actually! - the Special Education office will have an Advisor for the deaf. Even though Thomas has some hearing that person will know where to start in terms of supporting you and him in getting some help. They can also make referral into the public health system so you may not need to go to your GP for help at all - it might be worth just calling them, particularly as you already have private audiology information available. |

| Thanks for that information he is seeing a speech therapist next week and have booked him in for another private hearing test for next week aswel. I would like to get it sorted asap so that i can know what i need to do to get him ready for school. will be good to get some answers finally |
