I am considering getting an Easiyo but i wanted to ask for those that use them a couple of questions

Do they really work out cheaper than buying a 6pack when on special(I only buy when about $3.50 or cheaper) once you have bought the mix and the fruit squirty things to go in?
Do they have the same sort of fridge life or does it have to be eaten quicker?

I imagine theres got to be some good to them since they have been around for a long time no15years or so ??

We arent HUGE yoghurt eaters in the house but DH generally takes them for lunch and ive just started my baby on yoghurt for lunch also

It didn't seem to work out cheaper for us. It usually went off before we used it all so the packs work out better for us. Plus I just don't like the taste lol

My mum did use it but it didnt work out cheaper, especially when she was the only one eating it cos us kids didnt like it. She ended up some uying the 1L tubs and that worked out cheaper.

I had one and used it regularly until I got pregnant.
I would only ever make the greek style one, and I used it in so many different things.
I used it in curries, and in place of sour cream in mexican.
I would have it on my breakfast, and if I wanted it as a sweet yoghurt I'd stir a spoonful of jam thru it.

I was told I couldn't have it during pregnancy cause it sits around in the fridge and there is a risk of listeria from that. I'll go back to making it after the baby is born.

My mum has one and uses it all the time, I'll ask her if it's 'cheaper' when she gets home!

We still buy normal yoghurt too, generally the 1L rather than the 6 packs.

We use one & mostly do the Greek one & it does not last long. Also have done the drinks & they are yum. I usually buy them when on specially so it may work out a bit cheaper sometimes.

It costs us $3.29 a week (for the mix) and it lasts a week.

We use it for lunches and for smoothies. I wish we'd got it sooner. Love it.

i use it every week.

This week it cost me $3 for a sachet. I dont buy the fruit stuff to put in. Its normally just for DD.

I prefer it because DD wont always eat a tub, so with easiyo i can just give her the right amount without wastage. We will use one in about 5-7 days but DP will also have some.

I guess for us its cheaper because there is no, or not much wastage, unlike the 6 packs.

I don't think it works out much cheaper at all.

But apparently you can use the culture from one mix, and use that to keep making more. That way it is alot cheaper, but I wouldn't have a clue how to do it.

We do, but only because we use the Low Lactose one for DS. Cheaper than buying ready made lactose free yoghurt, and the fact i can give just the right amount.

I like that I can have in the cupboard and make up when we are about to run out...mainly coz we live in hicksville and the yoghurt here is expensive so usually only buy when we go to town...and then run out.

I don't think they work out much cheaper, especially if you want to buy the squirty stuff to go in.
We only ever do the greek or natural yogurth and use it for cooking & smoothies etc.
One of the reason for me to buy one was to produce less rubbish.

I do that Kellie. IMO if all you want is plain yogurt, buying the mix isn't necessary, its a bit of a money spinner really. Yogurt is simply cultured milk so all you need is milk + culture. For the culture part just buy a container of natural yogurt. Add about 1/2 cup to the easiyo container, fill the rest with milk, mix and incubate in boiling water just like you would with an easiyo mix. Should thicken overnight. If you want a thicker yogurt, start with more yogurt and less milk.
After a few cycles I find is loses its 'potency' and have to start again from supermarket yogurt but still works out LOTS cheaper

oh and I forgot to say if you want greek just use greek as your starter. It won't be quite as thick since most of them use something like gelatin to thicken them up.
Those fruit squirty things are just sugar syrup with a bit of fruit puree, theirs TONS of cheaper, healthier and yummier things you can flavor yogurt with! Even just jam would be cheaper. Fruit puree and honey is nice, or sugar or maple syrup (the real kind)

It doesn't work our cheaper when the yogurt doesn't work! I dunno how I'm getting it so wrong. We just buy the 1 litre tubs now, easy for me to pour over cereal or add a bit to the morning milkshake, and easy to pop into tupperware for DD @ kindy.

I don't think it works out cheaper, but it tastes great and is much better for you.

I've heard you can use a small amount of the sachet and add milk powder + water. Sit it in boiling water for the usual time. Haven't tried it that way yet.

It depends, imo if you are making the 1L it's a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a 1L tub, but not the 6 packs.

That is interesting NutsNat, I might have to try that with the next batch of yoghurt.

Thanks everyone thats given me something to consider for sure. If i come across one, like if i get given one i might give it a go, and add fresh fruit or even tinned fruit etc. Altho im not huge yoghurt fan, i dont like the consistency

I just bought a 1litre tub today since my baby is only having about half a tub at the moment so it would be cheaper this way......

If i had say 4 kids at school it would work out cheaper for lunches etc

I do what NN does - you can actually make it in your crockpot or a widemouthed thermos if you don't have an easiyo.
I mix frozen berries through our yoghurt or golden syrup or I blend up tinned fruit for like peach yoghurt, etc.

I brought Easiyo because it was the same yoghurt that her daycare have and Arianne loves it.

Im not sure if it works out cheaper or not but I like making it myself :) I just have the plain yoghurts and not worry about the squeeze stuff.

I've just made my first batch of greek yoghurt this afternoon after digging out the Easiyo which hasn't been used in about 10 years!

Looking forward to trying it tomorrow morning for breakfast. I remember not liking it as a kid, but I think it was because my mum used to serve it warm or room temp, blerk!

Honey and walnuts is delightful with greek yoghurt...ahhhh....

Flake, re the yoghurt not working, what is it doing that it is not working...over winter when we lived in NZ, I found I would have to wrap it in a towel else it would not thicken coz it was too cold....also I would usually make it early evening then just before bed refresh the water with new hot water...no idea if this is bad but it worked lol.

My son loves yoghurt and I love Easi-yo... but I found that the live (???) bacteria in it gave him diarrhoea. And it stunk!! So I'm wondering what age he might be up to having it - maybe when he's 2yo or around that age.

We have one and use it pretty often..if I'm having a Frugal Mama Moment then I just use a starter from an old batch and fill the jar up with milk and make a new one lol.

We use organic, greek or classic- doens't really matter to us. The reason we use it is partly for price and partly cos it doesn't have gelatine in it like MOST yoghurts seems to do these days...yuck . I have no idea why this is added...I assume to give a 'better' texture and to make it go further?  but yuck gross lol

I use ours all the time - I actually got a little electric yoghurt maker on trademe a while ago and found it works wonderfully, our house can be quite cold and it just wasn't staying warm enough to set properly. Something else to do to make sure it works properly is mix it up with tepid water (about body temperature).

If you're making it from leftover yoghurt & milk, to thicken it up a bit just pop a couple of tablespoons of milk powder in too .

I think the cheapest litre of yoghurt at countdown yesterday was still over $5, so the $3.50 I got a packet for was definitely cheaper. Depending on how enthusiastic I am I either make it from milk, or a packet & we gobble it all up by the end of the week!

Something I've started doing is mixing the powder in with my electric beater - I used to get terrible lumpy yoghurt 'til I thought of doing it that way!

Thats a good point. Shop bought yoghurt has the live bacteria too??

I recommend buying it from Moore Wilsons rather than Farmers etc. They were selling theres a few weeks back for $15 when Farmers had them for $30.

You can probably get them a dime a dozen on trademe too if you didn't care about second handness.

Moore wilsons is the where the dairys/milk bars buy most of their products from and restaurants etc....cant remember the name of the Australian version........think it started with T

Woolworths has a starter kit for $20, and has extra jars for $8.99 for a set at the moment

people are selling for around $10 on TM but by the time you do postage and doesnt come with a starter book and sachet so you may as well get brand new etc

The one at umm Moore Wilsons was a whole set with 2 small jars, a big 1L container, a recipe book and the yoghurt maker. Not sure if they're still on special though.

Oh and Moore Wilsons are like um whole sales, buy in bulk, but like very fresh produce, etc.

We use the esi-yo containers, but make our own. We've put insulation between the yoghurt container and the main container to keep it warm, and leave it in the hot water cupboard overnight.
Another way to make it thicker is to boil down the milk a bit, then wait till it's the right temp, stir in the yoghurt you've kept for starter, and then in to the easi-yo. Once the yoghurt's made, take some out and keep it in a jar separately for the next batch to minimise the chance of getting other bacteria in there.
We have to start our culture off again from bought yoghurt every now and then, but that's mainly because we are making it using heated milk, and so the cultures that prefer hotter environments prevail and eventually that seems to lead to a more acidic taste.
I'm not making it at the moment though because the milk we use isn't pasteurised; we're buying in 1L bottles.

I think there is a difference. My DH knows all about food like this but he's in the other room and I can't be bothered getting up to ask him!!! Just thought I'd mention it in case your little one has the same reaction.

Also we bought our's on TM and picked it up locally. You don't need a manual - the sachets tell you what to do and it's very easy.

For the yoghurt mix I buy which ever one is cheapest at the supermarket, usually ends up being Hansels rather than the Eziyo branded one.
I found I ate a lot more yoghurt when I made mine. Can't wait to get back into it again.

Moore Wilsons - nom nom they're a wholesalers sell direct to the public and have the most amazing fresh section. They're fresh squeezed OJ is sublime. They are similar to Toops and Gilmours, its their fresh section that rocks.

I've never needed extra jars, I wash out the container when its empty and set it to make over night, its ready in time for breakfast.

We got ours from Farmers for $20 when they had it on special. We never actually buy the Easi-yo mixes, I always get the Hansells ones as they seem to be on special more and they have the Mango Passion flavour which is our favourite. We don't buy the Easi-yo squeeze fruit either, I buy the Passionfruit Pulp in a jar which lasts for a couple of weeks.. and it's cheaper.

I love ours - greek style is the best - I usually keep it natural and add fruit to it later.

I think that you can use the last cup of yoghurt and then add milk to fill the container and then 'cook' it again like normal. The cultures in the existing yoghurt make a new batch. I haen't done this but my Mum used to when we were kids. That makes it cheaper though!

Posted By: DJ

I use the greek one too - easiyo/hansells tends to work out cheaper for greek.

DD1 always only had plain unsweetened yogurt until she was about 2 - she still is happy to eat it plain or with fruit. DD2 is a fan too.

I read an article by a nutritionist that recommended easiyo/hansells over other yogurt for nutritional reasons.

OT - I've noticed lots of normal yogurt is sneaking artificial sweeteners in now - some are hard to spot, and even have "not artificial flavours/ colours" and "no added sugar" on the packs, but sure enough, artificial sweetener in the small print. At least with the powder you know what you're getting.

Thanks for the info on making the yogurt with milk and culture - will certainly give that a go!

I also recommend wrapping in a towel, putting in a hot water cupboard or near heater if it isn't working.
